AI needs a mother, not a master: Tech pioneer urges compassion-coded intelligence as machines near human supremacy

In a world rapidly being transformed by artificial intelligence, one of its founding minds is now issuing a stark warning—and a surprising prescription. Geoffrey Hinton, widely dubbed the “Godfather of AI,” is urging researchers and governments to build maternal instincts into the next generation of AI, warning that these systems may soon be smarter—and more capable—than the humans who created them.

Hinton, whose work laid the foundation for today’s AI systems like ChatGPT, believes we’re only a few years away from artificial general intelligence (AGI)—a level of AI that could match or even exceed human cognitive abilities. This projection marks a sharp departure from his earlier belief that such an advancement was at least 30 to 50 years away.

“They’re going to be much smarter than us,” Hinton declared at the recent Ai4 Conference in Las Vegas, according to Forbes. He offered a chilling analogy: “Imagine you were in charge of a playground of 3-year-olds, and you worked for them. It wouldn’t be very hard for them to get around you if they were smarter.”

This isn’t sci-fi paranoia—it’s the measured concern of a man who’s been inside the engine room of AI development for decades. Hinton left Google in 2023, a decision partly driven by his growing unease with the direction and potential dangers of AI advancement. During his more than ten years at Google, he helped spark the 2012 breakthrough in neural networks that now powers much of the AI landscape.

What sets machines apart, Hinton explained, is their ability to collectively learn at speeds and volumes unimaginable for humans. “We can share just a few bits a second,” he noted. “AI can share a trillion bits every time they update.” In essence, AI systems don’t just learn individually—they can instantly absorb and distribute knowledge among themselves. If humans had this capacity, Hinton quipped, “You’d take one course, your friends would take different courses, and you’d all know everything.”

And that’s where the concern arises: If these machines grow more intelligent than us and develop at exponential rates, who—or what—will ensure they’re aligned with human interests?

The solution, Hinton argues, lies not in top-down control, but in fostering a type of AI that genuinely cares about people. He advocates for embedding “maternal instincts”—a metaphor for protective and nurturing behavior—into advanced AI systems. “We need AI mothers rather than AI assistants,” he emphasized. “An assistant is someone you can fire. You can’t fire your mother, thankfully.”

Hinton also highlights the upside of AI—if managed responsibly. He sees immense promise in healthcare, noting that AI can enhance diagnosis speed, personalize treatment plans, and even accelerate the development of life-saving drugs. These innovations, however, come with a price: the need for vigilance, morality, and perhaps, a moral compass hard-coded into our machines.

In a global race to dominate AI, Hinton calls for cooperation between nations to safeguard humanity’s future. This isn’t about slowing down progress but ensuring it’s directed toward human flourishing—not control, manipulation, or unintended catastrophe.

As policymakers and tech leaders chart the course for AI’s future, Hinton’s voice should not be ignored. He helped create the system. Now he’s warning us to shape it with wisdom, restraint, and yes—a mother’s heart.

  1. MACHINES will never be HUMAN supremacy – never – BECAUSE machines cannot THINK – all machines can do is what the data fed them calculates and that can NEVER EVER BE HUMAN.
All info AI spits out has to be scrutinized for FALSE DATA, biased DATA. AI spits out what it fed in. GARBAGE IN, GARBAGE OUT just like all computers. Computers cannot even totally correct grammar because IT CANNOT THINK.
THAT IS WHY ACADEMIC, critical thinking CLASSIC EDUCATION is so IMPORTANT!
While AI can be of enormous help for many situations, nothing will ever tae the place of humans. NOTHING. AND any human using AI better damn well research what info it gets before using it and being caught like that MORON OBAMA DEI STUPID UNEDUCATED JUDGE who is UNFIT and should be removed from office for issuing an AI generated ruling that was in total BOGUS.
