In a dramatic pivot that’s sending shockwaves through political circles, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has scrapped plans to launch a third party and is instead preparing to throw his considerable financial and political weight behind Vice President JD Vance for a potential 2028 presidential run. Musk’s shift from founding the so-called “America Party” to aligning with rising Republican star Vance signals a renewed commitment to influencing American politics from within the GOP rather than dismantling it from the outside.
According to reporting from The Wall Street Journal, Musk, who poured nearly $300 million into helping Donald Trump secure victory in the 2024 election, has cooled on the idea of a third party due to the risks it poses to conservative unity. The move also follows a widely publicized fallout with Trump earlier this year, during which Musk posted on X that “Trump is in the Epstein files.” Despite this rupture, Musk’s new focus on Vance—Trump’s chosen vice president—may indicate a strategic reconciliation with the broader MAGA agenda.
While Musk initially stirred excitement among anti-establishment conservatives and libertarians by teasing the formation of a new political force, it appears the groundwork was never truly laid. Multiple would-be allies, including Libertarian Party Chair Steven Nekhaila, have expressed frustration over Musk’s silence and lack of action. “It doesn’t seem like anything has been in action, neither at the state level or at the ground level,” Nekhaila told the press. A planned July meeting between Musk’s team and a third-party campaign group was abruptly canceled, with insiders citing Musk’s renewed focus on his business ventures, including SpaceX, Tesla, Neuralink, and xAI.
JD Vance, the former Ohio Senator turned vice president, has been positioning himself as Trump’s ideological successor—something many on the right view as not only logical but necessary. He recently visited Rupert Murdoch’s sprawling Montana estate in a quiet but strategic move, meeting with the 94-year-old media mogul, his son Lachlan, and top Fox News executives. While the specifics of the meeting weren’t disclosed, sources familiar with the event suggest it revolved around maintaining momentum for the Trump agenda post-2028.
Montana State Auditor James Brown, who helped coordinate the visit, confirmed that Vance and his wife, Usha, followed up the high-level meeting with a symbolic hike, a nod to his everyman roots and America-first values.
Musk, wary of further alienating Republicans after his rift with Trump, appears to see Vance as the future of conservatism. The two have reportedly been in frequent communication in recent weeks. “So my hope is that by the time of the midterms, he’s kind of come back into the fold,” Vance told news outlets suggesting that Musk is once again ready to support mainstream conservative efforts.
Meanwhile, Trump himself appears to be softening toward his former “First Buddy.” In July, he posted on Truth Social that contrary to speculation, he has no intention of sabotaging Musk’s government contracts. “Everyone is stating that I will destroy Elon’s companies by taking away some, if not all, of the large-scale subsidies he receives from the U.S. Government. This is not so!” Trump wrote. “I want Elon, and all businesses within our Country, to THRIVE, in fact, THRIVE like never before!”
This marked a dramatic change in tone from earlier threats—including vague suggestions that DOGE, the agency Musk once founded, could be turned against him. “You know what DOGE is?” Trump told reporters. “DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon.”
Musk’s once-ambitious “America Party” was announced with fanfare following a July 4th online poll that showed 65.4% of his followers supported the idea of a new political party. “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk wrote. “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.” But mere weeks later, the movement appears to have been quietly shelved.
With JD Vance gaining momentum and the 2028 election already taking shape, Elon Musk’s reentry into the Republican fold signals a powerful alignment of tech money, conservative populism, and post-Trump strategy.
