Washed-up Wasserman Schultz says DeSantis, MAGA ‘declared war on people of color’

by

In a now-viral CNN appearance, Florida Democrat Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz launched a full-throated attack on Governor Ron DeSantis, the Republican Party, and President Donald Trump—going so far as to accuse them of declaring “war on people of color.” Her remarks centered around the controversial characterization of a new Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility in Florida, which some have dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz.”

Speaking with CNN anchor Jessica Dean, Wasserman Schultz made sweeping allegations that the facility is part of a broader Republican agenda rooted in racism and human rights violations. According to the congresswoman, “This is a complete mess that was a political stunt from the beginning that has had human rights abuses that are incomprehensible.” She claimed that the detention center, built near environmentally sensitive Everglades land, has not only harmed the environment but also disrespected tribal lands.

“This facility represents the worst of what MAGA Republicans and Ron DeSantis stand for,” she continued. “All they care about is the abuse of human rights. I mean, they have declared war on people of color.”

Wasserman Schultz further alleged that immigrants have been mistreated, denied access to legal counsel, and effectively “kidnapped” by masked ICE officers. She also tied these claims to Republican policies in education, accusing conservatives of attempting to “erase” minority histories in American schools and museums—another example, she says, of systemic oppression fueled by the GOP.

Unsurprisingly, CNN’s anchor offered no pushback or factual challenge to these extreme claims, allowing the congresswoman to speak freely and without scrutiny. That in itself is telling: a major news outlet offering a national platform for baseless accusations, while refusing to challenge incendiary language or demand evidence.

Wasserman Schultz’s statements are part of a broader trend among Democrats who increasingly weaponize identity politics to stir emotional outrage and smear opponents. Labeling DeSantis and Republicans as racists is nothing new but accusing them of “declaring war on people of color” is a serious charge—one that should require substantial evidence, which she failed to provide.

Governor Ron DeSantis, for his part, has consistently supported strong border enforcement and immigration policies aimed at protecting American communities. The “Alligator Alcatraz” facility, as critics have dubbed it, was created to streamline immigration processing and detain individuals who are in the country illegally—many of whom have pending criminal charges. DeSantis has emphasized law and order, national sovereignty, and respect for legal immigration—positions supported by millions of Americans across party lines.

The congresswoman’s attempt to tie this ICE facility to environmental degradation in the Everglades is also questionable. Florida’s Republican-led government has actually invested significantly in Everglades restoration efforts, with DeSantis championing clean water policies since taking office. It’s ironic that a Democrat would attempt to leverage environmental concerns against one of the few governors who’s made tangible progress in conservation.

Wasserman Schultz’s inflammatory remarks aren’t just hyperbolic—they’re dangerous. Claiming that “a lot of people are going to end up dead” due to Trump’s return to office is fear-mongering at its worst. Rather than engaging in constructive debate about immigration policy or detention conditions, she resorts to sensationalist rhetoric to score political points.

What Democrats like Wasserman Schultz fail to grasp is that most Americans support border security, due process, and the humane treatment of detainees—but they also expect their leaders to uphold the law. If enforcing immigration policy and protecting American communities is now considered “racism,” then it’s clear the left has lost touch with reality.

As election season heats up, expect more of these desperate smears from a party running out of ideas—and increasingly reliant on identity-based outrage to maintain relevance.
