A security arrangement involving the Los Angeles Police Department and former Vice President Kamala Harris has officially come to an end, following intense backlash from the city’s police union and growing concerns over the misuse of public resources.
According to a report by The New York Times, LAPD’s elite Metropolitan Division had been providing security for Harris after President Donald Trump terminated her federal Secret Service protection on August 29. However, that LAPD support was rescinded over the weekend after the Los Angeles Police Protective League (LAPPL) — the union representing rank-and-file officers — slammed the move as an inappropriate and costly use of city resources.
“This was nuts,” the union said in a blunt statement. “LA taxpayers should not be footing the bill for this ridiculousness.” The LAPPL emphasized that Metro Division officers should be focused on tackling crime in Los Angeles, not acting as private security for a political figure living in a multimillion-dollar estate.
“We are happy to report that the Metro officers assigned to protect the multimillionaire failed presidential candidate are back on the street fighting crime,” the union’s board told Fox News Digital.
Harris, who unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic nomination in 2020 before being tapped as Joe Biden’s running mate, has seen a notable decline in public support following her exit from office. Her time as vice president was marred by low approval ratings and persistent criticism over her handling of the border crisis and national security.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass tried to downplay the controversy, stating that the LAPD’s protection was never intended as a permanent measure. “The plan was always to provide temporary support,” Bass told The New York Times, thanking LAPD for “always prioritizing the safety of all Angelenos.” However, her office declined to comment further when contacted by Fox News Digital, raising questions about the transparency and decision-making behind the arrangement.
Bass previously labeled Trump’s decision to revoke Harris’ Secret Service protection as an “act of revenge” that endangered her safety — a claim that drew criticism from commentators who argue that Harris has received preferential treatment compared to other former vice presidents.
Under normal circumstances, former vice presidents are entitled to Secret Service protection for only six months after leaving office. However, former President Joe Biden had signed an order extending Harris’ protection by an additional year before leaving office in 2025. That extension expired this summer.
Trump formally signed a memo rescinding Harris’ extended protection, though the White House did not publicly detail the reasoning behind the decision. A spokesperson for Harris told Fox News Digital that no explanation was provided.
In the meantime, The Los Angeles Times reported that the California Highway Patrol had also stepped in to help provide security for Harris. Such a decision would require approval from Governor Gavin Newsom, whose spokesperson Izzy Gardon said, “Our office does not comment on security arrangements.”
Notably, the Secret Service continues to provide lifetime protection for former presidents and their spouses unless they voluntarily opt out, according to agency policy. Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, reportedly lost his own detail in July, The Wall Street Journal reported.

For Vice-Presidents it is typical for SS security for only 6 months… People complaining don’t know how to read a calendar…
