The NFL has once again sparked a political firestorm — and this time, it’s over its choice of Super Bowl halftime performer. The league announced Sunday night that Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny, a Spanish-language rapper and outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, will headline the 2026 Super Bowl halftime show in California.
Bad Bunny — real name Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio — has made headlines not only for his music but for his overtly political stances, including his fierce opposition to Trump-era immigration enforcement and his vocal support for Democrats like Kamala Harris. The decision to hand him the halftime spotlight is being blasted by conservatives as yet another sign that the NFL is more interested in pushing progressive agendas than uniting Americans through football.
“What I’m feeling goes beyond myself,” the 31-year-old rapper declared. “It’s for those who came before me and ran countless yards so I could come in and score a touchdown… this is for my people, my culture, and our history.”
The move immediately drew backlash from conservative voices and MAGA supporters, many of whom see the selection as a direct provocation to patriotic, traditional American values.
Robby Starbuck, a prominent conservative commentator and DEI critic, minced no words:
“This is not a pick designed to unite football fans. It was a pick designed to divide fans — and no doubt Bad Bunny will find some way to push a woke message.”
He added:
“Does this guy really scream American football to anyone? Be for real with me. No one thinks he does. This isn’t about music. It’s about putting a guy on stage who hates Trump and MAGA.”
Bad Bunny has publicly admitted he previously refused to tour the United States, claiming fear that his fans would be targeted by ICE under Trump’s policies.
“F***ing ICE could be outside my concert,” he reportedly said in a candid interview. “And it’s something that we were worried about.”
But now, after refusing to tour the U.S., he’ll perform on the country’s biggest stage. Conservative radio host Dan O’Donnell didn’t hold back:
“Turns out his business sense far outweighs his moral convictions.”
This controversial selection is only the latest in a string of politically charged decisions under NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, which has overseen halftime show bookings since 2019.
Last year’s Super Bowl featured rapper Kendrick Lamar, who used his slot to fire shots at fellow rapper Drake and touch on racial politics. Now, conservatives fear that Bad Bunny will do the same — only this time, with an added anti-Trump twist.
Predictably, left-wing social media exploded with applause for the announcement. Liberal users reveled in the reaction from conservatives.
“Bad Bunny is going to be the Super Bowl halftime show. In other news, Republicans and MAGA everywhere slowly cry themselves to sleep…” one progressive user mocked.
Another user joked:
“When Republicans find out that they can’t call ICE on Bad Bunny for the Super Bowl halftime show because he’s Puerto Rican.”
Bad Bunny has a track record of engaging in partisan politics. He endorsed Kamala Harris during the last election and has used his platform to criticize America’s response to Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria. He’s even released tracks with thinly veiled swipes at Trump, including a voice clip in “NUEVAYoL” that sounds like the president apologizing to immigrants.
In another politically-charged track, “Una Velita,” Bad Bunny takes aim at the government’s slow response to Puerto Rico’s crisis, echoing Democrat criticisms of Trump’s 2017 visit when he tossed paper towels into a crowd — a moment still used by the left to paint the president as insensitive.
Erick Klambara, a Pennsylvania podcaster, may have put it best:
“Having Bad Bunny at the Super Bowl Halftime Show is the equivalent of having Morgan Wallen at a soccer game in Mexico. It’s just not a good fit at all for the sport.”
For millions of Americans, the Super Bowl halftime show used to be a moment to celebrate unity, music, and entertainment — now it’s just a time for divisive political messaging. No thanks.

DUMP BAD BUNNY!! He’s nothing but a satan worshipping basterd!
NFL — stop with all these ‘woke’ crazies in the music business! Decent people are sick of it all!!
The solution is obvious … don’t watch the halftime show.
If Trump, indeed tossed paper towels into a crowd, it was a harsh suggestion that Puerto Rico will clean itself up when the people take back their land from the corruption and thieves. The US is declining because the people have lost their way; Puerto Rico will rise when the people insist on rising.
