Newly released heart-stopping bodycam footage shows the moment Atlanta residents sprinted toward danger to rescue Officer Malik Safi, who was trapped in his burning patrol car as ammunition inside the vehicle began to explode.

According to police, Safi was driving to back up another officer around 10:22 p.m. on Oct. 20 when he lost control of his cruiser and crashed into a house, the impact igniting the vehicle almost instantly. Flames quickly engulfed the patrol car as Safi, badly injured, struggled to escape.

Seeing the wreck, siblings Ryan Beck and Keshun Robinson bolted toward the blaze, joined by several nearby residents. As the heat from the fire caused one of Safi’s firearms to discharge inside the car, they kept pushing forward.

“We just went off our heart,” Beck said. “We don’t want to see nobody suffering in that type of situation. So we just hopped out and sprung into action.”

Robinson added that they tried to keep the wounded officer calm: “We’re just trying to comfort him and let him know he’s not by himself.”

Despite bullets popping from the fire, the group managed to drag Safi out of the yard and onto the sidewalk. “Everybody was just ducked behind the trees and everything,” one rescuer recalled.

One of the good Samaritans grabbed Safi’s police radio and made an urgent call:

“We have an officer down… Officer S-A-F-I… hurry up, he’s been in a wreck. His leg is broken.”

Emergency responders arrived moments later, rushing Safi to the hospital. Police said his injuries were serious but not life-threatening.

Keziah Reed, mother of Beck and Robinson, said she wasn’t surprised her sons ran toward danger.

“I feel extremely proud of them both,” she said. “I feel like they did exactly what they were taught to do—to help and have empathy for other people.”

The dramatic footage has since circulated widely, highlighting a rare moment when strangers, without hesitation, put their own lives at risk to save a police officer.
