Melania Trump, Usha Vance’s pre-Thanksgiving visit to Marine base was not without controversy

by

First Lady Melania Trump caused an online frenzy Wednesday after delivering a blunt, future-focused warning to Marines at Air Station New River in Jacksonville, North Carolina — a message critics tried to paint as “dystopian,” even as military insiders praised her honesty.

Standing before Marines, their spouses, and their children, Melania didn’t sugarcoat the stakes of America’s race for technological dominance.
Artificial intelligence is propelling America’s military into a new era. We are moving from human operators to human overseers – fast,” she declared, adding that AI will “alter war more profoundly than any technology since nuclear weapons.”

Her message was clear: America can’t afford to fall behind. “The shift from soldiers to machines is already underway. Autonomous helicopters, swarming drones… fighter-less jets and autonomous bombers are on the way,” she said.

Predictably, social-media critics had a meltdown. One user sneered, “Is this speech supposed to be dystopian?” Another joked it was a “Trailer for the new Terminator spin-off.” A third gasped, “Whattt? She actually told soldiers they are being replaced by robots?”

But many Americans — and many service members — pushed back.“This isn’t dystopian, it’s reality,” one reader countered. Another noted the obvious upside: fewer troops sent directly into danger. “I’d prefer to be told the truth than lied to,” added a third.

Despite the outrage from the online left, Melania has emerged as a surprisingly strong voice on technology and national security. She already leads the White House Task Force on Artificial Intelligence, where she has highlighted both the promise of tech — driverless taxis, drone logistics, robot-assisted surgeries — and the urgent need to teach the next generation to master it.

To win the AI war, we must train our next generation… America’s students will lead the Marine Corps in the future,” she told students at Camp Lejeune earlier that day.

While critics mocked her warnings, the military is already deep into autonomous systems. The MQ-9 Reaper drone, the unmanned K-MAX helicopter, and the Air Force’s “loyal wingman” drones are all operational or in late-stage development. The new B-21 Raider bomber is designed with advanced AI capabilities — potentially able to fly with just one pilot or even none at all.

Exactly the reality Melania was pointing to.

Of course, it is the Marine who will always play the most critical role in realizing mission success,” she emphasized, pushing back on the notion that technology replaces human courage — instead reinforcing it.

Melania was joined by Second Lady Usha Vance, in their first solo joint appearance without their husbands. They met Marines, families, and students at multiple bases, delivering Thanksgiving well-wishes and encouragement.

Melania, dressed in a Blazé Milano safari jacket and chestnut Christian Louboutin boots, and Usha in a burgundy turtleneck dress with suede heels, toured classrooms, held children, and spoke personally with military families. Melania even told one young girl she was “beautiful.”

Thank you for your service… My husband, the President, is sending his best regards,” she told students at Lejeune High School.

  1. Why do people have to be so hateful? The First Lady does nothing but represent America in a dignified, positive manner.
