Dem mayor of crime-infested Oakland has SUV stolen right from City Hall

by

Oakland’s spiraling crime problem didn’t just make headlines this week — it marched straight into City Hall and targeted the office of Democratic Mayor Barbara Lee.

In a stunning display of brazen lawlessness, a thief reportedly broke into the mayor’s City Hall office, snatched her keys, and made off with her city-owned SUV. Yes, you read that correctly — the criminals didn’t just prowl the streets; they allegedly walked into the heart of local government.

The Oakland Police Officers Association confirmed the embarrassing episode.

“The Oakland Police Department is investigating the theft of a city-owned vehicle. On February 17, 2026, OPD was notified that the vehicle was stolen from Oakland City Hall,” a spokesman said in a statement. “The vehicle was recovered within hours. OPD is following up on potential leads.”

The SUV — identified as a Ford Expedition — didn’t stay missing for long. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, it was later located in Vallejo. Oakland POA spokesman Sam Singer said the recovery happened within hours, and two additional sources confirmed the sequence of events.

But the details raise serious questions. Preliminary reports cited by the Chronicle indicated that the door to Lee’s office appeared to have been tampered with. Investigators suspect the keys were taken on Presidents’ Day, with city officials discovering the SUV gone the following day.

Mayor Lee, who narrowly secured victory in the 2024 mayoral race, sought to reassure residents.

“As with criminal cases such as this, the Oakland Police Department is actively investigating, and we cannot comment further at this time. No one in Oakland should have to worry about their car being stolen, whether they’re a resident, a city worker, or the Mayor. Public safety is a priority across our entire city,” she said.

That’s a comforting sentiment. But many residents might point to the numbers and ask whether words match reality.

According to data cited by the New York Post, FBI statistics showed a staggering 9,914 motor vehicle thefts in Oakland in 2024 — placing the city among the worst in the nation. Even more alarming, the overall crime rate reportedly ran four times higher than the national average that year.

Nearly 10,000 stolen vehicles in a single year. And now, even the mayor’s own SUV isn’t off limits.

Social media users were quick to seize on the irony, noting that when crime reaches the mayor’s doorstep — quite literally — it underscores what many frustrated citizens have been saying for years: public safety in Oakland isn’t just a talking point. It’s a crisis.

If City Hall can’t protect its own garage, residents are left wondering — who’s protecting them?
