Chili’s takes swipe at Ruth’s Chris over dress code drama

by

A sizzling social media spat is serving up more than just steak—it’s dishing out attitude.

The casual dining giant Chili’s has jumped into the spotlight after taking a cheeky jab at upscale rival Ruth’s Chris Steak House, whose strict dress code has been roasted online.

The drama ignited on X when a post spotlighted Ruth’s Chris’ “business casual” expectations—rules that encourage what the brand calls “proper attire.” But before the debate could simmer, Chili’s fired off a one-liner that instantly went viral:

“The only dress code at Chili’s is that you have to be dressed.”

That zinger racked up more than a million views, with diners across the internet jumping into the food fight—some cheering the laid-back vibe, others defending fine dining traditions.

Meanwhile, Ruth’s Chris isn’t backing down from its polished image. The steakhouse’s policy states that guests who don’t meet the dress code could be redirected to the bar or lounge instead of the main dining room—a move critics say feels exclusionary.

The guidelines go further, spelling out exactly what won’t make the cut:

“The following attire is not permitted in our dining rooms: Gym wear, pool attire, tank tops, clothing with offensive graphics or language, revealing clothing or exposed undergarments.”

And yes—hats are part of the controversy too. Diners wearing ball caps are asked to remove them or relocate to the bar area.

The upscale chain operates under Darden Restaurants, the powerhouse behind brands like Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, and The Capital Grille.

Online, opinions are as divided as a steakhouse seating chart. Some users embraced Chili’s come-as-you-are philosophyOthers weren’t so quick to ditch dress codes, arguing that ambiance matters:

  1. If I’m looking for fine dining which is fairly rare for me I don’t want to see wife beater tank tops, hairy backs or the fact that your upbringing was so lacking you don’t know enough to remove your hat while dining. I support Chris’s position on standards.
