Florida Dem boss arrested, accused of smashing disabled vet with a bullhorn

by

A Florida political protest turned into a street-level showdown Saturday when a local Democratic leader was busted for allegedly clobbering a disabled military veteran with a bullhorn in broad daylight.

Brian Stewart, 63, who chairs the Hernando County Democratic Party, is accused of striking Thomas Michta—a permanently disabled veteran—during a heated confrontation at a so-called “No Kings” protest, according to reports.

Witness accounts say the clash escalated quickly. Stewart allegedly swung the megaphone at Michta’s head before shoving him, setting off a tense standoff that lingered even after the initial blow.

The two men “continued to argue for about 30 seconds before Stewart walked away,” according to reporting from the Tampa Bay Times.

Authorities later tracked down Michta, who was found with a “visible lump on his head,” a detail noted by a sheriff’s deputy in an arrest affidavit. Stewart was subsequently taken into custody and charged with simple battery.

The political fallout was immediate—and fierce.

Florida Republican Party Chairman Evan Power blasted the incident, declaring, “Violence and political intimidation have no place in our state, and Floridians deserve better than mere silence from Democrat leadership.”

He didn’t stop there, calling directly for accountability at the top: “Nikki Fried must immediately remove Brian Stewart from his position of leadership in the Florida Democratic Party!”

Power also tied the episode to broader concerns about political rhetoric. “The fact that this occurred at a far-left ‘No Kings’ protest only underscores how dangerous and inflammatory rhetoric from the radical Left continues to spill over into real-world violence. Leadership is measured by action, and the silence from Florida Democrats is deafening,” he added.

Democrats, for their part, issued a statement condemning violence—but also offered a version of events that pointed the finger back at the alleged victim.

“We have been made aware that our Chair, Brian Stewart, was arrested after responding to a provocation from a local agitator who threw a drink on him and yelled obscenities at community members during a protest,” the party said, suggesting Stewart reacted to escalating behavior.

Video of the altercation reportedly exists, though it has not been widely circulated. According to the Hernando Sun, which reviewed the footage, the clip shows Stewart extending his arm with the megaphone toward a man just off-camera—identified as the moment of impact.

The video reportedly captures Stewart accusing the counter-protester of dousing him with a drink and demanding to know if he was “out of his mind?” He then presses the megaphone into the man’s chest and pushes him backward. Both men remain standing as the confrontation unfolds.

The Florida scuffle was just one flashpoint in a day marked by unrest tied to “No Kings” protests across the country.

In Los Angeles, authorities reported dozens of arrests as demonstrations boiled over. Officials say at least 75 people were taken into custody in the area—66 adults for failing to disperse, one adult on suspicion of possessing a knife, and eight juveniles.

According to local reports, tensions escalated after protesters allegedly hurled rocks, bottles, and chunks of concrete at federal officers. Police say their own officers were also targeted, with several sustaining minor injuries.

Despite the chaos, protest organizers painted a far different picture, touting the demonstrations as “the largest single-day nonviolent protest in modern American history.” They claimed more than eight million participants took part in over 3,300 events nationwide—and even abroad.
