Not in our name: IDF scrambles after soldier smashes Jesus statue

by

A viral image showing an Israeli soldier smashing a statue of Jesus lit up social media—and forced the Israel Defense Forces to move fast, admit the obvious, and promise consequences.

“Following the completion of an initial examination regarding a photograph published earlier today of an IDF soldier harming a Christian symbol, it was determined that the photograph depicts an IDF soldier operating in southern Lebanon,” the military said in a post on X. Translation: it’s real—and it’s bad.

The IDF didn’t sugarcoat it either. “The IDF views the incident with great severity and emphasizes that the soldier’s conduct is wholly inconsistent with the values expected of its troops.” That’s military-speak for: this crossed a bright red line.

The image, first pushed online by Palestinian reporter Younis Tirawi, appears to show a uniformed soldier swinging at a fallen statue of Jesus like it’s batting practice. Not exactly the kind of hearts-and-minds strategy you want in a region already on edge.

According to Reuters, the scene unfolded in Debel, a predominantly Christian village in southern Lebanon—one of the few still hanging on as fighting drags on between Israel and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah. The statue reportedly stood in a small garden shrine belonging to a local family.

A local priest confirmed the damage, underscoring what many feared: this wasn’t just battlefield chaos—it was a symbolic hit with real-world consequences.

Israel’s top diplomat didn’t wait long to weigh in. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar called the act what it was—“grave and disgraceful”—and issued a public apology.

“We apologize for this incident and to every Christian whose feelings were hurt,” Saar wrote, adding, “I commend the IDF for its statement, for condemning the incident, and for conducting an investigation into the matter. I’m confident that the necessary strict measures will be taken against whoever carried out this ugly act.”

Behind the scenes, the military says the case is now in the hands of its Northern Command, working its way up the chain like any other disciplinary mess. “The incident is being investigated… Appropriate measures will be taken against those involved in accordance with the findings,” the IDF said, adding that it’s also trying to help restore the damaged statue.
