Monday afternoon in Cambridge looked less like a college town and more like a combat zone.
Terrified drivers abandoned their cars and dove for cover after authorities say a heavily armed suspect marched down Memorial Drive firing wildly into traffic — spraying an estimated 50 to 60 rounds in broad daylight and leaving two innocent motorists fighting for their lives.
And almost immediately, outrage shifted from the shooting itself to a question plenty of Bay State residents are now asking: Why was this guy out on the street in the first place?
Authorities identified the suspect as Tyler Brown, who prosecutors say unleashed chaos near Memorial Drive and River Street shortly after 1 p.m. Witness video circulating online appears to show the gunman pacing through traffic with a rifle while stunned commuters scramble away from the danger.
The gunfire finally ended only after a Massachusetts State Police trooper and an armed civilian — identified by officials as a former Marine licensed to carry — confronted Brown and opened fire.
That armed citizen may have prevented an even greater massacre.
According to Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan, Brown “was walking down the middle of Memorial Drive and firing in an erratic manner” while traffic backed up around him. “In the course of doing that, two males in vehicles separately were struck by gunfire,” Ryan said.
Officials say both victims suffered life-threatening injuries. Brown was hit several times in the extremities and rushed to a Boston hospital, where he remains in custody. Prosecutors say he is expected to face charges including two counts of armed assault with intent to murder along with multiple weapons violations.
But for many watching the nightmare unfold online, the most infuriating detail came afterward. Boston 25 reported that Brown has a reported criminal history stretching back nearly 20 years, including prior gun and drug convictions. Even more alarming: the station reported Brown allegedly fired at Boston police officers during a 2020 incident while already on probation in another case.
Prosecutors reportedly pushed for a much longer prison sentence at the time. Instead, a judge handed down a lighter punishment — a decision that critics now say had catastrophic consequences.
Social media erupted within hours. Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy blasted the justice system online, writing: “the judge who let this guy off easy should go to prison.”
Massachusetts Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Minogue also seized on the shooting as evidence that the state’s criminal justice system has lost touch with reality. “The fundamental role of the governor is to uphold the law and keep our communities safe,” Minogue said. “When our criminal justice system throws common sense out the window and allows dangerous, violent people to get out of prison quickly or early, it means innocent moms, dads, and kids may be killed.”
He added: “I am grateful to the officers who stopped today’s attack and saved lives.”
Meanwhile, Democratic Gov. Maura Healey urged residents to stay away from the area and thanked first responders for securing the scene. “I’m closely monitoring the situation on Memorial Drive,” Healey wrote on X. “There is no ongoing threat to the public.”
That reassurance came as shaken residents processed footage that sounded more like a battlefield than a weekday commute. Audio captured from the scene appears to record a relentless barrage of gunfire echoing across Cambridge as panicked bystanders fled.
The FBI and local authorities continue investigating the incident. But for critics of Massachusetts’ increasingly controversial criminal justice policies, the political fallout may be just beginning. Because once again, the debate isn’t only about who pulled the trigger. It’s about who allegedly gave him another chance to do it.
