Mayor Jacob Frey uses Memorial Day to salute George Floyd

by

Minnesota liberals just can’t help themselves.

As much of America paused Monday to honor the men and women who died defending the country, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey decided to lead with a tribute to George Floyd — and the internet instantly lit him up for it.

The progressive mayor, whose city became ground zero for the 2020 riots after Floyd died during an arrest involving former Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin, posted a lengthy statement marking the sixth anniversary of Floyd’s death before later getting around to Memorial Day.

“Today, we remember George Floyd, who was murdered by a former Minneapolis police officer six years ago. That moment changed our city forever,” Frey wrote.

He went on to praise what he described as Minneapolis’ efforts to confront “painful truths about race, policing, inequity, and trust,” while touting police reforms and redevelopment projects surrounding George Floyd Square and the so-called “People’s Way.”

Frey insisted the city has worked to “rebuild trust with neighbors,” adding that Minneapolis has been challenged “not just to say we’ve changed, but to prove it.”

But critics weren’t buying the timing — especially on a holiday dedicated to fallen American service members.

One furious commenter shot back: “Why don’t we remember that today is Memorial Day and honor those people who deserve to be honored?”

Another blasted Floyd as “a lifelong criminal not a hero,” before adding: “Today is about those who fought for our freedom so you could say stupid stuff like this.”

Others accused the mayor of elevating “false narratives” while ignoring the sacrifices of US troops killed in combat.

“Maybe you should open your eyes and remember what this day is actually about,” another resident wrote. “This day is about men and women who have literally sacrificed their lives for us.”

The backlash only underscored how deeply divisive Floyd’s legacy remains six years later.

Floyd’s death in May 2020 triggered nationwide protests, riots, looting and billions in property damage across major American cities. Minneapolis itself saw blocks burned, businesses destroyed and police precincts abandoned during the chaos that followed.

Even now, Frey remains a lightning rod in his own city. One local recalled the embarrassing moment activists publicly chased him away during a community gathering, chanting “Go home Jacob!”

Still, not everyone piled on. One supporter lamented the “terrible comments” flooding the mayor’s page and defended Floyd by writing: “No one deserves to die the way George did.”

According to Daily Mail, Frey eventually posted a separate Memorial Day message later in the day after the criticism intensified.

The mayor has continued to align himself with left-wing activist causes long after the 2020 unrest faded from the headlines.

Earlier this year, Frey lashed out at federal immigration authorities following deadly confrontations involving Minneapolis residents Renee Good and Alex Pretti. In one profanity-laced press conference, the mayor reportedly told ICE agents to “get the f*** out” of Minneapolis while dismissing claims of self-defense from federal officers as “bull****.”

  1. He had 1 job to do, memorialize fallen soldiers who served our country, and he couldn’t get it done.
