Just when it looked like the Iran conflict was beginning to settle into the diplomatic phase, President Donald Trump decided he wasn’t finished firing shots.
This time the target wasn’t Tehran. It was a return round to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
In a blistering Truth Social post Saturday morning, Trump accused the Italian leader of abandoning the United States during the military campaign against Iran and then attempting to repair relations once the dust settled.
Trump’s criticism comes after days of increasingly public friction between two politicians who, until recently, were often portrayed by conservative media as natural allies on immigration, nationalism, and European politics.
🚨 WOW! President Trump just OBLITERATED Italian PM Giorgia Meloni after she publicly sounded off on him
47 says Italy did NOTHING for America during the war

Now the gloves appear to be off. Trump’s newest broadside accused Meloni of refusing key military cooperation during the conflict with Iran and suggested her position changed only after America emerged victorious.
Trump wrote:
“Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni asked, over and over, for a picture with me during the G-7 meeting in France. She is doing poorly in Italy with her level of popularity, possibly because she turned down the United States of America, a Country that truly loves and protects Italy, when it came to denying Iran from obtaining or developing a Nuclear Weapon (But so did NATO, for that matter!).”
“She wouldn’t even let us use Italy’s landing strips or runways, a great logistical inconvenience, and this despite the fact the U.S. contributes hundreds of Billions of Dollars a year to protect Italy, and other ‘so-called’ NATO Allies.”
“Now, after the United States defeated Iran militarily, she wants to be friends again in order to get her ‘numbers up.’ No thanks!!!”
If there was any doubt Trump intended the message to sting, that last sentence removed it.
The bad blood didn’t begin with military bases. It started with a photo.
During a recent interview with Italian journalist Daniele Compatangelo, Trump unexpectedly launched into a story about Meloni following their G7 meeting.
The conversation began innocently enough before Trump pivoted to what he apparently considered the real story. Asked about the meeting, Trump replied:
“Probably she is happy that I talked to her! I didn’t have to talk to her!”
“I don’t know what to say! She begged me for a picture! She wanted a picture with me so badly. I wouldn’t have done it, but I felt sorry for her!”
That claim immediately exploded across Italian media and political circles, generating outrage among Meloni supporters and delight among Trump’s critics.
For years, many conservatives viewed Meloni as one of Europe’s strongest center-right leaders. She built her reputation fighting illegal immigration, defending national sovereignty, and pushing back against Brussels bureaucrats.
That made her a natural favorite among many American conservatives.
But foreign policy has a funny way of exposing fault lines. The Iran conflict appears to have created exactly that kind of fracture. Trump’s frustration seems rooted in the belief that NATO allies should provide stronger operational support when American forces are carrying the burden of military action.
The president’s critics will call the comments reckless and unnecessarily personal. ++His supporters will likely see something else: a president who says out loud what many voters believe American leaders should have been saying for decades about allies who enjoy U.S. protection while resisting American requests.
Either way, the dispute has evolved from diplomatic disagreement into something far more entertaining for political spectators—a very public war of words between two of the most recognizable figures on the global right.
And judging by the tone of Trump’s latest post, this family feud is probably just getting started.
🇮🇹🇺🇸 Italy’s Meloni responds to Trump:
“President Trump, these constant, unprovoked attacks are senseless.
As for my popularity, being your friend certainly has not helped it, nor does it depend on my relationship with you.
My popularity depends on my ability to defend… https://t.co/IrfdB1uqLE pic.twitter.com/kxJlrXH0qF
