The awkward encounter came the same day Napa County prosecutors formally charged Paul Pelosi with one misdemeanor count of hit-and-run and one traffic infraction stemming from a July 3 collision in Yountville, California.

According to charging documents filed by the Napa County District Attorney’s Office, Pelosi allegedly struck a legally parked and unoccupied Tesla while driving a brown Maserati convertible around 2:30 p.m. Authorities say he briefly stopped before leaving the scene and continued driving until the vehicle became disabled approximately one-quarter mile away.

Investigators said a witness observed the collision, describing “major rear damage” to the Tesla that was significant enough to push one of its tires over a curb.

When questioned, Pelosi reportedly told investigators he knew he had struck something but did not realize what he had hit.

The misdemeanor charge carries a potential penalty of up to six months in county jail and a fine if convicted, although first-time misdemeanor hit-and-run cases are often resolved through probation or other alternatives depending on the circumstances.

A spokesperson for the Pelosi family said Paul Pelosi had “personally apologized to the owner of the vehicle” and had “assured them that he would take responsibility for the damage.” The statement added that Nancy Pelosi would not comment further because it was “a private matter.”

Authorities also said Pelosi registered a preliminary blood alcohol concentration of 0.00%, distinguishing this incident from his widely publicized 2022 DUI arrest in Napa County. In that earlier case, Pelosi pleaded guilty after his blood alcohol concentration measured .082%, slightly above California’s legal limit. He ultimately received probation, fines, victim restitution and a brief jail sentence served through an alternative program.
