The trend exploded after traveler and content creator Roya Fox shared a video from a Finnish supermarket, marveling at the idea that shoppers could simply pick up a pink basket if they were interested in meeting someone. Her post quickly racked up millions of views, touching off a flood of reactions from people who said the concept sounded far less exhausting than modern online dating.

Unlike dating apps, there are no profiles to create, no algorithms deciding who you should meet and no endless swiping through strangers. The concept relies on something increasingly rare in today’s digital world: meeting another person face-to-face while going about everyday life.

Now this is the kind of innovation I can get behind.
Think about it. No subscription fees. No fake profile photos from 2009. No carefully curated bio claiming everyone “loves hiking” even though the closest they’ve come to nature is the landscaping outside Target.
You just pick up a pink basket and head for the produce section.
It’s refreshingly honest.
The beauty of the idea is its simplicity. If somebody’s carrying the basket, they’re sending a signal. If they’re carrying the regular basket, leave them alone and let them contemplate cereal prices in peace.
Of course, if America adopted this tomorrow, we’d probably have a congressional hearing before lunch. Somebody would insist there need to be seventeen basket colors, three advisory committees, a federal grant program and a warning label explaining that asking someone where they found the ripe avocados requires written consent.
Meanwhile, Finland is over there saying, “Here’s a pink basket. Good luck.”
Sometimes the old-fashioned way really is the best way.
