Lil Wayne sides with Trump on White House ballroom: ‘I’m so glad!’

One of President Donald Trump’s newest defenders on the White House ballroom project isn’t a Republican politician or conservative commentator.

It’s Grammy-winning rapper Lil Wayne.

Appearing on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast, Wayne dismissed much of the criticism surrounding Trump’s decision to build a permanent White House ballroom, saying he understood exactly why the project was needed.

“I’m so glad to hear Trump say — when they was mad at him about building the ballroom — and he was like, everything we do we have to do it on the damn lawn,” Wayne said.

He continued:

“So people who don’t know nothin’ hearin’ that thinkin’ he just bein’ Trump — no, for real, I was glad to hear him saying that.”

Wayne explained that his opinion came from firsthand experience after performing at a White House event celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop during the Biden administration.

Trying to recall who hosted the event, Wayne paused before asking:

“I did meet miss, uh… who was the vice president?”

After a friend reminded him it was Kamala Harris, Wayne continued discussing why he believes the White House needs a larger indoor venue for major events.

Trump announced plans for the new ballroom in 2025, arguing that presidents from both parties have spent decades erecting large temporary tents on the South Lawn because the historic White House simply lacks adequate indoor event space. The White House has described the project as a nearly 90,000-square-foot addition capable of seating hundreds more guests than the East Room.

The project has remained politically controversial throughout construction. Critics have questioned its cost, funding structure and impact on the historic White House grounds. Trump has maintained the ballroom itself would be privately funded while administration officials have argued that related security improvements are separate from the construction costs.

Following the attack at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner earlier this year, Trump renewed his defense of the project, arguing that a secure on-site ballroom would better protect presidents, guests and foreign dignitaries.

In a Truth Social statement, Trump wrote:

“What happened last night is exactly the reason that our great Military, Secret Service, Law Enforcement and, for different reasons, every President for the last 150 years, have been DEMANDING that a large, safe, and secure Ballroom be built ON THE GROUNDS OF THE WHITE HOUSE.”

He added:

“This event would never have happened with the Militarily Top Secret Ballroom currently under construction at the White House. It cannot be built fast enough!”

Construction remains underway as the administration says the ballroom is intended to serve future presidents regardless of party.
