James Carville urges Democrats to stop fighting voter ID laws

by

BS BRIEF:

  • Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville said Democrats should stop fighting voter ID requirements, arguing the issue consistently enjoys broad public support.
  • Carville clarified he does not support President Trump’s broader SAVE America Act but believes Democrats should back some form of voter identification requirement and “move to the next thing.”

JAMES CARVILLE URGES DEMOCRATS TO DROP THEIR FIGHT AGAINST VOTER ID

Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville is urging his party to rethink one of its longest-running election arguments.

Speaking on his Politics War Room podcast, Carville argued that Democrats are unlikely to prevail politically by continuing to oppose voter identification requirements, suggesting the party should instead accept a compromise and focus its attention elsewhere.

“We are not gonna win the war against some kind of ID,” Carville said. “It doesn’t make any sense. It doesn’t fix anything. But maybe just go along with it and move to the next thing.”

Carville maintained his view that voter fraud remains rare, describing it as an “infinitesimal problem.” Even so, he acknowledged that requiring identification to vote has remained popular with voters across numerous public opinion surveys.

“It exists on such a minuscule scale,” Carville said, “but… for whatever reason, it polls at 75%.” He suggested allowing alternative forms of identification, such as utility bills, as part of a compromise.

The comments come as President Donald Trump continues pressing Congress to approve the SAVE America Act, legislation that would require documentary proof of citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections and establish nationwide voter identification standards. The proposal has become one of Trump’s top legislative priorities heading into the 2026 midterms.

Carville emphasized that he was not endorsing the SAVE America Act itself.

Instead, he argued Democrats should stop expending political capital on opposing the broader concept of voter identification.

“I never had a problem with it,” Carville said. “If every poll shows 75 or better, saying we should have some kind of ID to vote… just quit fighting it and go along with it and move to the next thing.”

His co-host, veteran journalist Al Hunt, pushed back during the discussion, noting that many states already have voter ID laws and criticizing the broader provisions contained in the SAVE America Act. Carville reiterated that his comments were directed toward the political strategy surrounding voter ID rather than support for the pending federal legislation.
