DEMOCRATIC FEUD SPILLS INTO OPEN AFTER SUMMER LEE’S SOCIAL MEDIA MIX-UP
An already simmering divide inside the Democratic Party spilled into public view Tuesday after a social media exchange involving Rep. Summer Lee, Rep. Josh Gottheimer and Rep. Ilhan Omar quickly went viral.
The dispute began after Gottheimer shared comments from CNN commentator Van Jones criticizing the growing influence of the Democratic Socialists of America within Democratic politics.
“I’m glad to see other Democrats reiterating what I’ve been saying all along: the DSA are not Democrats. They’re socialists, who want to hijack the Democratic Party,” Gottheimer wrote on X.
He added:
“The Democrats have a big tent. That’s our strength. We embrace a range of ideas — but there’s no room for anti-American bomb-throwers who oppose our ideas, values, & leaders.”
Lee responded by asking:
“What about Dems who sign bombs and vote to drop them?”
However, the criticism appeared to confuse Gottheimer with Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, who signed an artillery shell during a 2024 event with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Gottheimer replied less than 20 minutes later:
“You know that’s the other Jewish guy named Josh, right?”
The exchange quickly attracted attention online, with X users adding a Community Note to Lee’s post reading simply, “different Josh.” Axios reporter Alex Thompson and others also noted that the image Lee appeared to reference involved Ukraine rather than Israel.
The conversation escalated when Rep. Ilhan Omar entered the discussion.
“He signed the bombs you voted to be dropped. Hope this helps,” Omar wrote.
Gottheimer answered by pointing to Omar’s own vote supporting the same 2024 Ukraine aid legislation.
“Ilhan, you know who else voted for it? You.”
He attached a screenshot showing Omar voting in favor of the bill that included funding for Ukraine. Neither Omar nor Lee publicly responded further to Gottheimer’s reply.
The disagreement comes as ideological divisions inside the Democratic Party have become increasingly visible following several victories by Democratic Socialist-backed candidates in recent primaries. Gottheimer has emerged as one of the party’s most outspoken critics of the DSA, arguing that democratic socialism does not reflect the party’s mainstream platform.
Van Jones, whose comments helped spark the exchange, recently warned that some positions embraced by parts of the activist left risk alienating broader Democratic voters. While reaffirming his support for progressive priorities such as criminal justice reform and climate action, Jones argued that certain DSA positions were harming the party politically.
The online dispute illustrates the debate taking place inside Democratic ranks as centrists and progressives compete over the party’s messaging, priorities and electoral strategy heading into the next election cycle.
