A cascade of reports from The New York Times, NOTUS and other outlets painted an increasingly bleak picture of the Democratic National Committee, revealing mounting debt, sagging fundraising, internal warfare and growing frustration with Chairman Ken Martin just months before the midterm elections.
Among the most explosive revelations was a report that Martin allegedly threw his phone toward a junior staffer’s desk during an emotional confrontation that later resulted in an internal human resources complaint.
While Martin has disputed suggestions that he intentionally threw the phone at anyone, the episode has become symbolic of an organization many Democrats privately describe as adrift.
The financial picture may be even more troubling.
According to The New York Times, the DNC is operating roughly $2 million in the red while the Republican National Committee has amassed approximately $128 million in available cash.
NOTUS added another startling detail: the DNC quietly used its Washington headquarters as collateral to secure a $15 million line of credit. Although party officials note similar financing arrangements have occurred before, several Democratic strategists told reporters the timing—outside of a presidential election year—has fueled anxiety about the committee’s financial health.
Perhaps the most striking part of Sunday’s story wasn’t Republican criticism.
It was Democrats criticizing Democrats. MSNBC host Joe Scarborough sounded an alarm.
“This is not sustainable. Anyone who cares about the Democratic Party—including Ken Martin—would say ‘Enough.’ The DNC is flat broke. This must change now.”
Former Senate Democratic aide Adam Jentleson declared Martin’s tenure “effectively over.”
“It’s clear no one respects him and he is terrible at the job.”
Political analyst Matthew Yglesias was equally blunt.
“Fundamentally this is a fundraising job and the guy in the job is not good at it.”
Democratic strategist Amanda Litman summed up the situation in four words:

Election analyst Joe Sudbay added what many frustrated Democrats appeared to be thinking.
“This is so embarrassing. Can we please pay off our debt?”
Even veteran Republican strategist Mike Murphy, who has frequently criticized President Trump, argued the fundraising collapse signals a deeper problem.
“No donor confidence in DNC.”
Frank Luntz noted the irony.
“So much is going politically right for Democrats these days. But dysfunction and debt inside the DNC… are creating anxiety for top Democrats.”
Adding to the pressure, The Bulwark’s Sam Stein teased yet another forthcoming report involving Martin, writing simply:
“It’s Ken Martin story day. Ours is coming too.”
Democrats continue wrestling with ideological divisions between the party establishment and its increasingly influential progressive wing. Recent battles involving activist David Hogg, disagreements over strategy and repeated fundraising disappointments have intensified questions about whether the national party has found a clear direction heading into November.
Some Democratic insiders have privately expressed concern that donor confidence has eroded while Republicans continue posting record fundraising numbers. Whether Martin survives politically may depend less on the phone incident than on whether he can convince skeptical donors that the party is prepared for what many expect to be a fiercely contested election cycle.
