President Donald Trump wasn’t about to let Friday night’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner controversy fade quietly into the weekend.
Instead, he poured gasoline on it.
Two days after joking during his WHCD speech that he briefly mistook CNN White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins for transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney because of Mulvaney’s famous Bud Light promotion, Trump returned to Truth Social Sunday with a digitally altered image showing Collins’ face superimposed onto Mulvaney’s body holding a Bud Light can. The meme immediately reignited the already-heated debate that had dominated political media throughout the weekend.
The image referenced Trump’s line from Friday night’s speech.
“I thought Kaitlan had really made it big with a major new sponsorship. But then I informed her that it wasn’t her on the Bud Light can. It was Dylan Mulvaney.”
The remark was met with a mixed reaction inside the ballroom, but it exploded online almost immediately.
CNN defended Collins after the dinner, while journalists and media commentators accused Trump of personally targeting one of the network’s White House correspondents during an event traditionally dedicated to celebrating the First Amendment and political journalism.
Collins, who received the White House Correspondents’ Association Award for Excellence in Presidential News Coverage Under Deadline Pressure, later posted a message quoting Eleanor Roosevelt:
“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”
She also praised the role of a free press in holding powerful people accountable.
Mulvaney also weighed in.
Rather than expressing outrage, the transgender influencer said being compared to Collins was “an honor” and thanked Collins publicly. In a separate video response, Mulvaney suggested criticism from the administration only strengthened a sense of purpose and visibility.
But while progressives condemned Trump’s meme, conservatives argued the controversy exposed what they viewed as a contradiction in progressive rhetoric.
Numerous conservative commentators asked a simple question: if activists insist transgender women are women, why would comparing a biological woman to a transgender woman suddenly be treated as offensive?
The argument spread rapidly across X, where users questioned why media organizations seemed unable—or unwilling—to directly address that point.
Here’s the dilemma.
For years we’ve been told that a transgender woman is a woman. Full stop. End of discussion.
Then Trump compares Kaitlan Collins to Dylan Mulvaney—and suddenly we’re informed it’s an outrageous insult.
Well… which is it?
That’s the question nobody seems eager to answer.
Instead, we get a flood of stories about Trump’s behavior while the underlying contradiction gets quietly swept under the rug.
Whether you thought the joke was funny or juvenile isn’t really the point. The point is that one joke forced the media and progressive activists into defending two positions that don’t comfortably coexist. They’ve spent years insisting there is no meaningful distinction. Then they reacted as though there obviously is. That’s why this story has legs.
