For years, Republicans have warned that the Democratic Socialists of America represent the direction the Democratic Party is heading. On Sunday, one of the organization’s top leaders essentially confirmed it herself.
Appearing on Fox News Sunday, Democratic Socialists of America National Co-Chair Megan Romer faced a rapid-fire series of questions from host Shannon Bream about the group’s official platform. Rather than soften the rhetoric or explain away controversial positions, Romer embraced them.
“Just give me a true or false,” Bream began.
“Abolish the Senate?”
“True,” Romer replied.
“Replace the presidency and Supreme Court as we know them?”
“Yep.”
“Abolish ICE?”
“Absolutely.”
“Abolish borders and give amnesty to anyone currently in the U.S. illegally?”
“As a long-term plan, yep.”
“Defund the Pentagon?”
“Absolutely.”
“Abolish prisons?”
“Yeah… as part of a long-term program.”
“Government ownership of most large corporations?”
“Yeah, absolutely.”
The exchange quickly exploded across social media, with conservatives arguing it was one of the most candid public acknowledgments yet of the Democratic Socialists’ long-term vision for the country.
When Bream pressed Romer to explain why the organization wants to eliminate the U.S. Senate, Romer argued the chamber itself was fundamentally flawed.
“The Senate is an anachronistic institution. It comes from the British House of Lords,” Romer said. “It is made to protect power.”
She continued by arguing the upper chamber was created “to make sure that the people didn’t have too much of a say,” adding that the DSA would instead support expanding Congress while replacing the current system with a single legislative chamber.
The interview became even more contentious when the discussion turned to prisons. Bream challenged Romer directly.
“I’m talking about murderers and rapists. Is there anybody that should be incarcerated?”
Romer argued that many inmates are imprisoned because of “crimes of poverty” and suggested that eliminating those conditions would dramatically reduce incarceration. When Bream pressed again about violent offenders, Romer acknowledged some individuals cannot safely function in society but suggested future alternatives should focus on public safety rather than punishment.
“Some people are not able to be functional members of society, that’s true,” Romer said. “But what does that look like to keep the rest of us safe? We’re talking about safety, we’re not talking about punishment.”
The interview comes as Democratic Socialists continue expanding their political footprint through Democratic primaries, particularly in New York and Colorado, fueling a growing debate over how much influence the organization’s platform now holds within the broader Democratic coalition. Earlier this month, Romer declared establishment Democrats “should be worried about the voters,” arguing DSA-backed candidates are increasingly resonating with progressive activists.

Well, at least she was honest.
You’ve got to give Megan Romer credit for one thing: there wasn’t any political camouflage.
Usually when politicians get asked about radical ideas, they dance around them, redefine the question, blame Republicans, or tell you the media is taking everything out of context.
Not this time.
“True.”
“Yep.”
“Absolutely.”
That’s refreshingly direct… even if what follows sounds like someone emptied a political science seminar into a blender. No Senate. No ICE. No borders. Defund the Pentagon. Eventually no prisons. Government ownership of major corporations.
At some point you stop asking whether this is a campaign platform and start wondering whether someone accidentally handed Shannon Bream a script from a college coffeehouse debate circa 1972.
Here’s the political problem for Democrats: Republicans don’t even have to exaggerate these positions. They can simply roll the tape.
And that’s where this story gets interesting. The Democratic Party keeps insisting these ideas aren’t representative of the party. Yet DSA-backed candidates continue winning Democratic primaries, and the movement itself keeps gaining influence in blue cities and progressive districts.
