Dem Senate candidate says farmers would ‘trade five Americans’ for one undocumented worker

An Arkansas Democrat running for the United States Senate has come up with one heck of an endorsement for undocumented farm labor.

Five Americans for one.

Hallie Shoffner, the Democratic nominee challenging Republican Sen. Tom Cotton, made the remark while discussing immigration and agricultural workers during an appearance on the “Free Arkansas” podcast.

Shoffner, a sixth-generation farmer, argued that undocumented immigrants have long played an important role in American agriculture.

“Every farmer will tell you at one point, we did, or still do, employ undocumented immigrants,” Shoffner said.

She criticized immigration authorities for removing such workers, describing them as hardworking people whom farmers have come to know.

“They’re some of the best people we know, and honestly, we’d trade five Americans for just one of them because of how hard they work,” Shoffner said.

The remark quickly spread online after conservative journalist Matthew Foldi posted a video of it.

Shoffner questioned why agricultural workers who have spent years working and spending money in American communities don’t have an easier way to obtain legal status. The United States does have the H-2A program, which allows agricultural employers who meet certain requirements to bring foreign nationals into the country for temporary or seasonal farm work.

Shoffner has personal experience with immigrant agricultural labor. Breitbart reported that she has previously discussed Mexican H-2A workers employed by her family’s farm and has advocated for immigrant communities through a nonprofit organization.

Her latest comments are drawing attention because she’s trying to unseat Cotton, one of the Senate’s most prominent immigration hardliners. The White House has also seized on the remarks.

White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis cited Shoffner’s comments while arguing in a Newsmax interview that Democrats prioritize illegal immigrants over American citizens.
