BUFFALO VENUE BANS DJ AFTER CHARLIE KIRK MEME SONG SPARKS BACKLASH
A Buffalo music venue is finding itself in the middle of another free-speech debate after banning a DJ who played the viral “We Are Charlie Kirk” meme song during a recent performance.
Nietzsche’s, a longtime live music venue in Buffalo, announced Sunday that it had learned about the incident only after clips circulated on social media. “We want to apologize for a moment that occurred during a show at Nietzsche’s last weekend,” the venue wrote in a Facebook statement.
After speaking with the artist and promoter, management said it understood the song “was intended in jest,” but added that it “isn’t something that has any place at Nietzsche’s.” The venue then announced the DJ “will not be performing at the club again.”
The controversy centers on an AI-generated song titled “We Are Charlie Kirk,” originally released shortly after the 2025 assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. The song was initially presented as a sincere tribute, but it quickly took on a second life online.
Internet users began sharing it ironically in memes, parody videos, and satirical posts, transforming it into a running joke across TikTok, X, and other social media platforms. As often happens online, the original context became blurred as different audiences interpreted the song in completely different ways.
Reaction online was immediate—and deeply divided.
The venue itself avoided weighing in on the politics behind the meme, instead emphasizing that it wanted patrons to feel welcome regardless of their beliefs.
