Mamdani savagely booed off Staten Island stage in under a minute

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s appearance at an NYPD community celebration ended almost as soon as it began Tuesday night after a crowd of Staten Islanders drowned out his remarks with loud boos, jeers and profanities.

The Democratic socialist mayor took the stage during the NYPD’s 43rd Patrol Borough National Night Out Against Crime at Midland Beach, an annual event that drew roughly 3,500 residents, families and police supporters to the Staten Island boardwalk. Instead of the warm welcome city officials typically receive, Mamdani was met by a chorus of boos before he could begin speaking.

Videos circulating on social media show attendees yelling for the mayor to leave while others flashed thumbs-down gestures as he approached the podium.

Known for lengthy public speeches, Mamdani kept this one remarkably short.

“Happy Night Out Against Crime.”

That was essentially the extent of his remarks before aides escorted him from the stage after less than a minute. Throughout the encounter, the mayor maintained a broad smile despite the hostile reception.

According to reports, Mamdani later remained at the event long enough to pose for photographs with several attendees, but the evening’s defining image had already been captured: a mayor struggling to be heard over a crowd that clearly wasn’t interested in listening.

The awkward appearance comes during an increasingly difficult stretch for the mayor.

Just days earlier, Mamdani was prevented from delivering prepared remarks at the funeral of Army Sgt. Angel Sarah Rampersad after family members reportedly objected to his participation. His office later released the speech he had intended to give.

Meanwhile, opposition to Mamdani’s planned attendance at September’s 25th anniversary ceremony commemorating the September 11 terrorist attacks has continued to grow. Thousands of victims’ relatives have signed petitions urging him not to attend, citing past comments and ongoing political controversies surrounding his administration.

National Night Out is designed to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Across New York City, the NYPD hosted more than 70 events Tuesday evening featuring games, food, music and opportunities for residents to meet neighborhood officers.

In Staten Island, however, much of the attention shifted away from community policing and toward the mayor’s abbreviated appearance.

The event was called National Night Out Against Crime, and the loudest thing getting chased away wasn’t a criminal—it was the mayor’s speaking time. If your entire speech can fit on a Post-it Note, you might want to reconsider the venue next year.
