Dethroned Miss North Carolina speaks out, says conservative faith, not slurs cost her the crown

Former Miss North Carolina USA Brittany Boltinhouse says losing her crown may have been a “blessing in disguise”—and believes her conservative Christian convictions helped put her on the wrong side of pageant officials.

The Miss USA Organization removed Boltinhouse on August 5, only weeks after her June 28 victory and less than a month before the national Miss USA competition.

In a Friday interview with the Carolina Journal, Boltinhouse said:

“I believe and think I was stripped from my title because of my political stance and my belief system as a conservative Christian woman.”

“I’m proud of my faith. I’m proud of my standards,” she added. “I’m a proud conservative woman, but a Christian woman. I’m a God-fearing woman.”

Boltinhouse said a confidentiality agreement prevents her from discussing the full circumstances. Asked whether her support for President Donald Trump influenced the decision, she acknowledged she could not be certain.

“I don’t know. All I can say from the information that I have today and what I believe and I think is honestly I don’t know. I wasn’t really given anything.”

Miss USA Chairman Thom Brodeur did not cite Boltinhouse’s politics or religion. He said the organization acted after reviewing conduct occurring “over an extended period of time.”

The organization “does not tolerate racism, homophobia, transphobia nor language that strips any person of their dignity,” Brodeur said.

Several outlets have connected the controversy to alleged social-media posts from 2017 through 2019. The New York Post and Guardian, citing North Carolina outlet NC Beat, reported that an account allegedly associated with Boltinhouse repeatedly used a racial slur.

The Miss USA Organization has not publicly released the posts or specifically identified which remarks prompted its decision. Boltinhouse’s confidentiality agreement leaves her version incomplete as well.

Brodeur said an apology had been offered, but added that it “does not undo the harm, and it does not change the outcome.”

He also warned against turning accountability into public cruelty:

“There is a young woman at the center of this. She has been named, examined, and judged in public in a way that most of us would not survive.”

First runner-up Myla Hadley has assumed the North Carolina title and will compete at Miss USA on August 27.

Boltinhouse, meanwhile, said she forgives the organization and hopes other women—conservative or not—will continue expressing their beliefs.

“Always stand for what you believe,” she said, “no matter what.”

MY QUICK TAKE:

There are two possible stories here, and the confidentiality agreement has put both of them behind velvet ropes.

If Boltinhouse was removed because she is a conservative Christian, that is political discrimination wrapped in a sash and sprayed with enough hairspray to survive a hurricane.

But if the decision concerned years of racial slurs, calling that merely “conservative Christian values” is not a defense—it is an insult to conservative Christians.

Pageant officials should release enough detail to explain their decision without organizing an online stoning. Boltinhouse should also address the alleged posts directly when legally able.

Until then, everyone is judging a pageant where the most important contestant—evidence—has not walked onto the stage.
