Democratic Socialists of America co-chair Megan Romer has become the latest socialist leader to discover that slogans are much easier to deliver than tax policy.
During an interview with The New Yorker’s David Remnick, Romer confidently announced, “We believe in taxing the hell out of millionaires.”

She then struggles to explain what that actually means:

Romer: “Yeah. You know, again, I don’t have, like, a solid…”

Then Remnick asked the dangerous question: What does that mean?
Remnick: “What does ‘taxing the hell out of them’ mean?”
Romer: “Yeah. You know, again, I don’t have, like, a solid…”
Remnick: “But shouldn’t you?”
Romer: “Ummmmm, that’s a good question.”
Remnick: “If you’re the co-chair of the DSA, shouldn’t you be more specific than just taxing the hell out of something? What exactly do you mean?”
Romer eventually retreated to the organization’s internal democratic process, explaining that policies would be decided collectively.
The exchange exploded online Friday, with conservative accounts arguing that Romer had exposed how little planning exists behind the DSA’s most popular rhetoric.
“They’re so stupid. They don’t know how the economy works,” one critic wrote.
Another said Romer was “not at all used to an ounce of scrutiny being placed on the idiotic rhetoric.”
The organization’s newly released Workers Deserve More program does call for “aggressive wealth taxes on the richest individuals and corporations.”
It does not specify the rate, define exactly who qualifies as rich, estimate the revenue or explain how the government would value and tax privately held assets.
The platform is highly specific, however, about what the organization wants that money—and considerably more government power—to accomplish.
DSA proposes public ownership of America’s largest corporations and essential industries, universal healthcare, publicly owned housing, universal rent control, free education through college, student-debt cancellation and a federal jobs guarantee.
It also calls for abolishing the Senate, replacing the presidency and Supreme Court, eliminating ICE, defunding the Pentagon and eventually dismantling the existing prison system.
Romer recently affirmed those positions during a Fox News interview, answering “true,” “yep” or “absolutely” as host Shannon Bream read through them.
Yet when asked for a basic tax rate to finance this reinvention of American society, the plan suddenly became a group project.
MY QUICK TAKE:
I finally understand the DSA budget.
Step one: Tax the hell out of somebody.
Step two: Democracy.
Step three: Free housing, free healthcare, free college, no bills and apparently no need to explain how any of it works.
Romer did not need to produce a 900-page tax code on the spot. A rough rate, an income threshold or even one example would have demonstrated that somebody had opened a spreadsheet before declaring war on every dentist who owns a lake house.
Instead, we received “ummmmm” followed by a reminder that socialism is democratic. Wonderful. So is ordering pizza with six people. Eventually, someone still has to calculate the bill.
