Former MSNBC host Joy Reid has delivered another lecture explaining which political beliefs Black Americans are permitted to hold—and what moral defect they must possess if they disagree with her.

Appearing Sunday on progressive podcaster Jack Cocchiarella’s program, Reid claimed Black conservatives receive support from the political right only after demonstrating contempt for other Black people.
“In order to get that boost from the right, you have to humiliate your own people,” Reid said. She accused Black Republicans of displaying “self-hate” and “disdain” for their own community.
Reid argued that some Black conservatives are willing to endure that humiliation because they are “thirsty” for attention from the right. She then widened the indictment, declaring that “MAGA Trumpism is about humiliation.”
Her principal example was Florida Republican Rep. Byron Donalds, whom Reid accused of suggesting Black Americans were better off “during slavery and Jim Crow.”
That is not what Donalds said.
During a 2024 Black Republican outreach event, Donalds said Black families remained more intact during the Jim Crow period and argued that Black voters historically held conservative views. He then blamed Lyndon Johnson-era welfare policies for contributing to the deterioration of family structure.
“During Jim Crow, the Black family was together,” Donalds said. He did not defend segregation, slavery or racial violence.
The poorly phrased reference produced predictable outrage. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries invoked the murder of Emmett Till, while Reid confronted Donalds during an MSNBC interview.
Donalds responded plainly: “I never said that it was better for Black people in Jim Crow.” He added that he was “very grateful” Americans no longer live under that system.
The new attack goes considerably further than criticizing Donalds’ choice of historical comparison. Reid effectively argued that Black conservatism itself requires racial betrayal.
She offered a similarly broad description of the philosophy behind it, claiming conservatism is fundamentally about “cruelty” because capitalism amounts to “dog eat dog.”
Reid has used this line of attack before. Earlier this year, she called rapper Nicki Minaj a potential MAGA “house pet,” alleging Republicans wanted to exploit her cultural popularity.
