BS BULLETIN:
- Police bodycam shows officers finding four children — including a 2-month-old baby — allegedly left home alone while their mother took a Bahamas cruise.
- The children were found together hiding in a bathroom after first responders forced their way into the North Miami Beach apartment.
- When the mother’s attorney reminded the judge she denied the allegations, the judge wasn’t exactly persuaded.
Newly released police bodycam footage shows the moment officers discovered four young children allegedly left by themselves while their mother was away on a three-day Bahamas cruise.
North Miami Beach police and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue forced their way into the apartment Sept. 26 after the father of the youngest child called 911.
Inside, officers found all four children together in a bathroom. The youngest was just 2 months old. Another was 2 years old.
“There you are!” an officer can be heard saying as police locate the children.
Their mother, 29-year-old Nathalie Belizaire, had allegedly boarded the Carnival Conquest the previous day for a three-day trip to the Bahamas.
According to the arrest report, the father of the 2-month-old became suspicious after seeing what appeared to be a Carnival cruise ticket on Belizaire’s WhatsApp story.
He said Belizaire had told him the children would be staying with their great-grandmother.
But when police contacted the great-grandmother, she reportedly said Belizaire never brought the children over.
Investigators said Belizaire’s brother also told them she texted him Saturday night asking him to check on the children.
Police were waiting when Belizaire returned to PortMiami on Monday. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers took her into custody as she disembarked and turned her over to North Miami Beach police.
Belizaire faces four counts of child neglect.
Then came her appearance before Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer.
“You cannot make this up,” Glazer said while reviewing the allegations.
“These poor kids were home alone for three days?” she asked. “We’re just grateful nothing else happened to these kids.”
Belizaire’s public defender told the judge that his client denied the accusations.
“Judge, Ms. Belizaire denies these allegations,” the attorney said.
“Of course she does,” Glazer replied.
Later, when the defense stressed that the accusations were still only allegations, Glazer pointed out one rather inconvenient detail: “They arrested her disembarking the cruise ship.”
Glazer set bond at $2,500 for each count, for a total of $10,000, and ordered Belizaire to have no contact with the children.
She posted bond and was released Tuesday night.
MY QUICK TAKE
There are questionable babysitting arrangements.
And then there is allegedly getting on a boat and sailing to another country while your 2-month-old is back home with three other kids.
Even the judge seemed to run out of judicial ways to say, “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
