President Donald Trump came to Long Island Friday to talk crime, cops and the dramatic nationwide decline in violent crime. But when the subject turned to New York Attorney General Letitia James, Trump took a detour — and brought a flamethrower.
Speaking at the Nassau County Police Academy in Garden City, Trump ripped into Gov. Kathy Hochul before turning his attention to the attorney general who famously pursued the civil fraud case against him.
“Crooked Attorney General Letitia James. She is the most dishonest — a real slob,” Trump told the crowd. “They had her! She got off on a technicality. They had her, but she got off on a technicality. But let’s see what happens here.”
That last line is likely to get some attention.
Trump was referring to the federal mortgage-fraud prosecution of James. The original criminal case was dismissed after a judge found that the U.S. attorney who brought it had been unlawfully appointed. Prosecutors subsequently tried to obtain another indictment, but grand jurors rejected the effort. James has denied wrongdoing and accused the Trump administration of pursuing political revenge.
Trump, however, clearly hasn’t forgotten how this particular feud started.
“Remember when she was campaigning and, ‘We will stop Donald Trump!’” he said. “She didn’t know anything about me, but she campaigned on, ‘We will stop Donald Trump.’ Well, I think I’m — am I here as president?”
Then came the kicker.
“Letitia James is a disgrace to law, order, law enforcement,” Trump declared. “She’s a dishonest person, very dishonest, very crooked person.”
The event was billed as a law-and-order appearance, with Trump touting newly released FBI statistics showing violent crime fell 9.3% in 2025, including an 18.1% decline in murder. He also endorsed Republican Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman in his campaign against Hochul for governor.
But Trump’s Letitia James broadside supplied the clip of the day.
And judging by “let’s see what happens here,” the Trump-James saga may not have reached its final episode yet.
