BS BULLETIN:
- Rep. Ayanna Pressley told a Massachusetts crowd that “the Confederacy is still alive and well.”
- The Squad member said the problem is “bigger than Trump” because “that’s all MAGA is.”
- Pressley followed it up by declaring that “white supremacy” and “anti-Blackness” will remain even after Trump leaves office.
Apparently 1865 was not the end of the Confederacy after all.
Somebody alert the historians.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) was campaigning for Sen. Ed Markey at Roxbury Community College in Boston on Monday when she offered her assessment of Donald Trump, MAGA and roughly half the American electorate.
“It is bigger than Trump,” Pressley told the crowd.
Why?
“Because whenever we do the work of ousting the occupant of the Oval Office, the Confederacy is still alive and well.”
Then she explained exactly who she was talking about.
“That’s all MAGA is,” Pressley said. “White supremacy is still alive and well. Anti-Blackness will still be alive and well.”
There isn’t much ambiguity hiding in that one.
Pressley wasn’t simply accusing Trump of racism or attacking one administration policy. She was explicitly describing the MAGA movement itself as the modern Confederacy.
And this isn’t exactly a one-off rhetorical flourish.
In May, Pressley accused members of the Trump administration of wanting Black Americans to “pick cotton” rather than “pick the president.”
Last month, during a House hearing about the Smithsonian, Pressley said the Trump administration had become “synonymous with fascism” and described MAGA as a “cult” fueled by “fear and hate.”
The latest blast came while Pressley was stumping for Markey, who is facing Democratic Rep. Seth Moulton in Massachusetts’ Senate primary. Markey currently holds a double-digit polling advantage, according to Mediaite.
So apparently the winning campaign message is:
Vote Markey.
Stop the Confederacy.
MY QUICK TAKE
Remember when we were lectured endlessly about lowering the temperature?
Calling millions of Americans the Confederacy, white supremacists and anti-Black apparently didn’t make the memo.
Pressley isn’t arguing that MAGA has bad policies. She’s telling voters what MAGA people are.
And once you decide your political opponents aren’t merely wrong but the modern incarnation of the Confederacy, compromise becomes pretty easy: You don’t.
