The Trump administration isn’t just talking tough about Antifa anymore.
It’s following the money.
The Treasury Department unleashed its counterterrorism machinery Wednesday against what it calls “violent far-left terrorist networks,” sanctioning three organizations and two individuals — including an Italian operation accused of providing the digital backbone used by violent Antifa cells around the world.
At the center of the action is Autistici/Inventati, or A/I Collective.
The State Department designated the Italy-based organization a Specially Designated Global Terrorist, saying its hackers and developers provide encrypted chats and email, web hosting, secure video conferencing, streaming services and “anonymity shields” to radical groups in the United States and Europe.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio wasn’t subtle about what the administration thinks A/I is doing.
Its services, the State Department said, give far-left terrorist groups the ability to “organize, recruit, communicate, and carry out violent attacks” while remaining “beyond the reach of the law.”
And the American connection is particularly interesting.
According to the administration, Oregon-based Rose City Antifa has used A/I’s infrastructure to organize and incite violence in the United States. The government also says a far-left media operation using the same infrastructure has published communiques from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hamas, Hezbollah and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
Treasury didn’t stop there.
It also sanctioned Britain’s Palestine Action, the group banned as a terrorist organization by the UK government after attacks on defense facilities, and Masar Badil, which Treasury says operates as a front for the PFLP. Two Masar Badil leaders — Zaid Abdulnasser and Rawa Alsagheer — were added to the sanctions list as well.
The Palestine Action designation is already generating an international fight.
The group and its supporters argue that the terrorism label criminalizes political activism and threatens free speech. Its UK ban remains in force after an appeals court upheld it, with another appeal headed to Britain’s Supreme Court.
But Washington’s message is considerably less nuanced.
“Far-left extremists, their fronts, and their enablers should be on notice: We will bring the full weight of our economic tools to bear,” Bessent said in Treasury’s announcement.
Then came the line that tells you exactly where this administration intends to take this:
“Political terrorism has no place in our society, and we will continue to cut the financial lifelines of these groups until they are eliminated.”
These aren’t symbolic labels.
Placement on Treasury’s Specially Designated Nationals list generally blocks property and interests in property under U.S. jurisdiction and prohibits Americans from conducting transactions with designated entities. Treasury’s notice also flags secondary-sanctions risk for the newly designated groups.
In other words, Trump isn’t trying to win an argument over whether Antifa exists.
His administration is starting to treat portions of the international far-left network like the terrorist financing problem it says they are.
MY QUICK TAKE
For years we endured the ridiculous debate over whether Antifa was even an organization.
Trump apparently has a different question: Who hosts their websites? Who encrypts their communications? Who helps them organize? And where’s the money?
That’s a much more uncomfortable conversation. Because smashing windows is one thing. A global infrastructure that allegedly gives violent radicals encrypted communications, anonymous hosting and the ability to coordinate across borders is something else entirely. And when the Treasury Department starts using the same financial weaponry America uses against international terrorist networks, “Antifa is just an idea” isn’t much of a defense.
