WASHINGTON — House Democrats announced Thursday that Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries will be required to wear a body camera during future meetings with Republicans following revelations that he privately met with Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner.
The meeting reportedly covered affordability, housing, immigration and other potential areas of cooperation.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez raised concerns after learning about the encounter.
“I don’t know what that was about,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
Democratic officials reportedly agreed that nobody should ever have to say those words again.
Under the new protocol, Jeffries must activate his bodycam at least 30 seconds before entering any room containing a Republican or Trump associate.
Footage will be livestreamed to a special Signal group administered by AOC, with progressives authorized to send an emergency “STOP TALKING” alert to Jeffries’ Apple Watch if negotiations appear dangerously productive.
Additional safeguards include GPS monitoring and software designed to detect phrases including “common ground,” “bipartisan,” “reasonable compromise” and the particularly troubling “that’s actually a good idea.”
Any detection will automatically notify Democratic leadership.
Jeffries will then have 15 minutes to post something describing Trump as an existential threat to democracy.
Concerns intensified after reports that Kushner suggested Jeffries also meet with White House chief of staff Susie Wiles.
“We’re not saying Hakeem has been compromised,” one Democratic strategist said. “We’re simply saying he spent an extended period with Jared Kushner and afterward continued behaving normally. Obviously, we need answers.”
Former CNN host Don Lemon demanded an explanation, opening an interview with Jeffries by asking the question he said everyone wanted answered: “Why did you do it?”
Jeffries defended the meeting, saying Americans expect political leaders to occasionally talk to people they disagree with if it might help solve problems.
That explanation reportedly made things worse.
“Talk to people you disagree with?” one Democratic staffer said. “What is this, 1997?”
Jeffries has attempted to reassure Democrats by promising that “no one is going to get a pass” and that a Democratic House will hold members of the “Trump cartel” accountable.
Progressives called the statement encouraging but said the bodycam requirement will remain in place.
Democratic leaders said the new safeguards should allow Jeffries to conduct bipartisan negotiations safely.
Provided, of course, nobody actually agrees on anything.
