Portland women’s sports fans get the boot — twice — for ‘Save Women’s Sports’ shirts

Eight fans say they were ejected from Sunday’s Portland Thorns women’s soccer match after showing up in shirts carrying messages including “Save Women’s Sports,” “Woman” and “Girls just wanna have fundamental rights.”

Then came the remarkable encore: members of the group went to a Portland bar dedicated to women’s sports and were asked to leave there, too, reportedly because other customers were uncomfortable with their shirts.

“Save Women’s Sports” can get you thrown out of women’s sports.

A group of eight spectators was ejected Sunday from a Portland Thorns National Women’s Soccer League match at Providence Park after stadium personnel reportedly objected to apparel carrying messages supporting women’s sports.

The fans were wearing XX-XY Athletics gear and shirts bearing slogans including “Save Women’s Sports,” “Woman,” “It’s common sense,” and “Girls just wanna have fundamental rights,” according to OutKick.

Video from the confrontation shows Amy Sousa questioning a staff member as the group sits in its seats during the Thorns’ match against the Washington Spirit. The fans were given notices alleging violations of the Providence Park and NWSL Fan Code of Conduct before being escorted out.

Sousa told OutKick she was accused of being “transphobic” and said the group had not caused a disturbance.

“We did nothing. We had not even shown our shirts. We were dressed like this when ejected,” Sousa later wrote on social media.

The NWSL’s code prohibits displays used for political campaigning or advocacy. Providence Park also warns ticket holders that management reserves the right to eject patrons.

But the controversy didn’t end at the stadium. Members of the group subsequently went to The Sports Bra, a Portland establishment built around showing and promoting women’s sports. And they got kicked out of there, too.

Video recorded by Sousa shows a bar employee telling the group that other patrons were uncomfortable with their shirts and asking them to leave. Storyful reported that five people were removed from the establishment. Sousa said the group had already purchased food and drinks and had interacted only with one another before being asked to go.

So, within the space of one afternoon in Portland, people wearing shirts advocating for women’s sports say they were removed first from a professional women’s sporting event and then from a bar whose entire business is celebrating women’s sports.

The Thorns confirmed Sunday’s game took place at the city-owned Providence Park, where 19,065 fans watched Portland lose 2-1 to Washington.

OutKick reported that the confrontation at the stadium came after local LGBT organizer Hannah Perry publicly urged officials and the venue to intervene before the match. According to the outlet, Perry said she had contacted Portland police, the mayor, Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek’s office and Providence Park.
