BS BULLETIN:
- Hunter Biden is turning his most infamous possession into a cryptocurrency: $LAPTOP.
- The meme coin launches Wednesday with 1 billion tokens — and Hunter and his fellow founders get 30%.
- In a particularly pointed twist, some tokens are earmarked for people who lost money on President Trump’s $TRUMP coin.
Six years after Hunter Biden’s laptop became one of the biggest political stories in America, the former first son has apparently decided there is one thing left to do with it:
Monetize it.
Hunter is part of the team launching a new cryptocurrency called $LAPTOP, named for the computer that exploded into the 2020 presidential campaign and exposed everything from his overseas business dealings to deeply personal evidence of his drug addiction.
The meme coin is scheduled to launch Wednesday, Sept. 9, on Base, the blockchain network developed by Coinbase.
Hunter teased the project Monday on X with a video montage featuring years of television coverage about — what else? — Hunter Biden’s laptop.
The project’s website describes the idea as an effort to “reclaim the narrative,” portraying Hunter as taking control of a story that other people have told about him for six years.
And there could be some serious money involved.
The coin will have a total supply of 1 billion tokens, with 30% allocated to Hunter and his fellow founders. Those founder tokens will initially be locked and then vest over time.
Then comes the part clearly designed to troll President Donald Trump.
Another portion of the supply will be distributed through airdrops that include crypto wallets belonging to people who lost money on Trump’s $TRUMP meme coin, along with Hunter’s Substack subscribers and others.
The project also ties 30% of the token supply to a collection of real-world predictions. Depending on what happens, corresponding tokens will either be permanently destroyed — “burned” in crypto terminology — or donated to charity.
Among the questions: Will a Democrat win the White House in 2028? Will Trump be impeached? Will his approval rating fall below 37%? And, naturally, will $LAPTOP eventually become more valuable than $TRUMP?
But Hunter’s crypto adventure is already producing another storyline.
Some crypto traders are trashing the project before the official coin has even begun trading.
CoinDesk reported Tuesday that Kraken deleted a social-media post promoting $LAPTOP after receiving a barrage of criticism. Andrew Callaghan’s Channel 5, whose mailing list was reportedly included among potential airdrop recipients, publicly said it had nothing to do with the project and doesn’t consider crypto a legitimate investment.
A Coinbase Base executive also emphasized that anyone can launch a token on the network and that $LAPTOP has no partnership with Coinbase or Base.
Meanwhile, copycats are already trying to cash in.
At least 14 imitation LAPTOP tokens reportedly appeared on other networks shortly after news of Hunter’s project broke, generating millions of dollars in trading before the real $LAPTOP even launches.
All of which makes for a remarkable final chapter — or perhaps just another chapter — in the laptop saga.
The computer that Big Tech once worked furiously to stop Americans from talking about is now becoming its own cryptocurrency.
