Jemele Hill apparently has a question she’d prefer paying customers keep to themselves.

A subscriber watching Hill’s podcast dropped a rather uncomplicated comment into the discussion:

“What’s up with your hair?? lol 😂”

Hill’s hair is currently an unmistakably bright shade of blonde, but the former ESPN personality wasn’t interested in discussing the makeover.

“You think cuz you pay for a membership you get to just ask me about my hair?” Hill responded. “Whatchu mean ‘What’s up with it?’”

Then she turned the question around on the viewer.

“What’s up with your hair? Let’s talk about your hair,” Hill said. “It’s a dumb a** question. One day y’all gon’ learn.”

The clip was posted to X on Monday and quickly racked up attention, with critics having considerably more fun with Hill’s reaction than with whatever answer the original subscriber may have expected.

There is also a bit of history that makes the episode more interesting.

Hill has previously spoken publicly about hair, appearance and racial beauty standards. During the 2020 Essence Festival, she recalled entering television in an era when executives often envisioned white women with blonde hair as the look most likely to appeal to sports television’s predominantly white male audience.

Six years later, Hill herself has gone dramatically blonde.

Nothing wrong with that.

Just apparently don’t ask her about it.

A paying customer typed six words about a very noticeable new hairstyle and somehow stumbled onto the launch codes.

Jemele, it’s blonde. Really blonde. People are going to notice.

If you dye your hair the approximate color of a highway warning sign, “What’s up with your hair?” isn’t exactly an investigative ambush.
