Joe Scarborough apparently looked at the Republican Party’s new midterm convention Wednesday morning and saw less politics than musical theater.
The Morning Joe host went on an extended riff while Mika Brzezinski attempted to preview the first-ever Republican Midterm Convention, which begins Wednesday in Dallas.
Scarborough’s opening came when the panel noted that Trump’s convention programming will compete for viewers with the NFL season opener between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks.
Scarborough knew which audience he thought would be watching what.
“What you’re going to have here is beta males watching the Republican convention and alpha males watching football!” Scarborough joked, adding that there would be “a lot of beta males participating.”
Then he moved on to The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Scarborough asked who would emerge to play Tim Curry’s famous role and sing “Sweet Transvestite,” before cracking that plenty of Republican senators could fill the part.
Brzezinski repeatedly attempted to steer the conversation back toward the GOP’s policy agenda, including health care.
Scarborough wasn’t quite finished. He continued referring to the gathering as “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and mocked MAGA’s frequent cultural emphasis on masculinity by imitating cries of “I’m alpha! I’m alpha!”
Behind the jokes is a genuinely unusual political event.
Republicans are gathering at Dallas’ American Airlines Center for a two-night midterm convention — something much closer to a campaign rally and policy showcase than the traditional presidential nominating conventions held every four years.
The official schedule lists 109 programming items or speakers over the two nights. Vice President JD Vance headlines Wednesday, while Trump is scheduled to appear both nights and deliver the main keynote Thursday.
Some Republican lawmakers in competitive races are skipping the event, while others are embracing the opportunity to appear alongside Trump. The Associated Press describes the gathering as part rally and part fundraiser, with organizers hoping to energize Republican voters ahead of November.
Scarborough’s contribution to the festivities?
Apparently deciding that MAGA’s big midterm convention needed fishnets and a soundtrack.
