Green card holder since 1976 busted over illegal 2020 vote — now DHS wants him gone

DHS says Bahamian national Anthony Tyrone Higgs illegally voted in the 2020 election despite not being a U.S. citizen.
Higgs has been a lawful permanent resident — a green card holder — since 1976.
Federal officials arrested him Sept. 3 and placed him in removal proceedings, citing the illegal vote and a criminal record that includes violent offenses.

He came to America during the Gerald Ford administration.

Fifty years later, federal authorities say Anthony Tyrone Higgs is facing removal after investigators discovered something a green card doesn’t permit him to do: Vote in a federal election.

Homeland Security Investigations says Higgs, a Bahamian national and lawful permanent resident since October 1976, illegally cast a ballot in the 2020 election. HSI agents arrested Higgs in Decatur, Georgia, on Sept. 3. He is now in ICE custody while the Department of Homeland Security pursues removal proceedings.

But the voting offense is only part of the story.

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said Higgs has a criminal record including armed robbery, domestic violence, and assaulting a police officer. According to DHS information reported by Fox News, his record also includes resisting arrest, two grand-larceny counts and two counts of possessing a weapon during a violent crime.

“On top of all of that, he illegally voted in the 2020 election,” Mullin said.

The White House seized on the case as part of the Trump administration’s broader crackdown on noncitizen voting.

“This alien was a guest in our country who forfeited his right to be in the U.S. when he committed these violent crimes and voted in the 2020 election,” White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis told Fox News Digital. “American elections are only for Americans.”

Federal law generally prohibits noncitizens, including lawful permanent residents, from voting in federal elections. Higgs isn’t the only green card holder to recently face consequences over illegal voting.

Earlier this year, former Coldwater, Kansas, Mayor Jose Ceballos-Armendariz pleaded guilty to three counts of disorderly election conduct after authorities said the Mexican national voted despite not being a citizen. He had held a green card since 1990 and later surrendered to ICE.

Fox reported that Colombian national Carlos Jaramillo-Grajales was sentenced in August to three years in prison after pleading guilty in a case involving identity theft and illegal voting over more than two decades. Other recent cases cited by DHS involve alleged or confirmed illegal voting by nationals of Slovakia, Australia and Mauritania.

MY QUICK TAKE

A green card comes with quite a few privileges. A presidential ballot isn’t one of them.

And after 50 years in America, “I didn’t know” becomes an awfully difficult explanation — particularly when federal officials say the illegal vote is sitting on top of a rap sheet that already includes armed robbery and assaulting a cop.

Whatever side of the election-integrity argument you’re on, this rule isn’t complicated: American elections. American citizens.
