Hunter Biden’s $LAPTOP coin crashes — then Hunter has a meltdown of his own

by

BS BULLETIN:

  • Hunter Biden’s new $LAPTOP meme coin lost nearly all of its peak value shortly after launching.
  • Blockchain analytics firm Bubblemaps said roughly 80% of traders who bought the token lost money.
  • Biden is now lashing out at critics, while insisting neither he nor his team sold their locked tokens or profited from the collapse.

Hunter Biden launched a cryptocurrency named after his infamous laptop.

What could possibly go wrong? Quite a bit, apparently.

Biden’s $LAPTOP meme coin debuted Wednesday and briefly rocketed to extraordinary heights before collapsing almost as quickly as it arrived.

The Washington Post reports the token reached roughly $190 before plunging below $2. Blockchain analytics firm Bubblemaps described the launch as a “bloodbath,” estimating that about 80% of traders who bought $LAPTOP lost money and more than 15,000 crypto wallets took losses.

Now Biden is fighting back.

The former president’s son unleashed an expletive-filled response to critics following the collapse, defending the project and pushing back against accusations surrounding the launch.

**WARNING: LANGUAGE**

The controversy is particularly rich because $LAPTOP was partly designed as a troll of President Donald Trump’s own cryptocurrency venture. Biden announced plans to distribute 20% of the token supply through airdrops that included crypto wallets belonging to people who had lost money on Trump’s $TRUMP coin.

One billion $LAPTOP tokens were created. Thirty percent were allocated to founders, including Biden, but are locked for six months and won’t fully vest for two years. Another 30% are tied to a series of real-world events that can trigger token burns or charitable distributions.

Then came launch day.

$LAPTOP exploded upward almost immediately before plunging roughly 99% from its peak. CoinDesk reported that some individual wallets were showing six-figure losses following the crash. One wallet examined by analytics firm Nansen was down roughly $199,000, while another buyer who hadn’t sold was down about $118,000.

Biden insists this wasn’t insiders cashing out.

“The team’s allocation is locked,” he wrote after the collapse. “Nobody on our side sold, and nobody could have.”

He said he personally hadn’t made any money and blamed the wild price movement on insufficient liquidity, technical problems and “predatory” traders using automated tools to jump ahead of other buyers.

The $LAPTOP team has similarly blamed sniper bots and thin liquidity and announced plans to deploy an additional four million tokens to incentivize liquidity. Biden also blasted media coverage describing the launch as a failure.

He said the project had given free tokens to people who lost money on Trump’s meme coin and complained that the press was nevertheless portraying $LAPTOP negatively.

“This journey is far from over,” Biden wrote.

The son of former President Joe Biden had promoted the project as a way to reclaim the laptop that became synonymous with years of political controversy surrounding him. Meme coins, however, are notoriously speculative assets whose value is generally driven by attention and trading enthusiasm rather than an underlying business or conventional asset.

$LAPTOP managed to demonstrate that volatility rather efficiently.

It took minutes.
