Independent journalist Aaron Rupar picked another fight with the Trump White House over the weekend.
This one escalated quickly.
Rupar posted video from President Donald Trump’s trip to Ireland showing a blonde female White House staffer attempting to move photographers away as Trump interacted with members of his family before boarding Air Force One.
“Another blonde Trump flunkie starts literally shoving photographers away from Trump,” Rupar wrote.
The White House had a rather different job description for her.
“This is a press wrangler doing her job — and doing it well,” the administration’s Rapid Response 47 account responded.

The account called Rupar “gutter trash,” referenced his age, and accused him of making “disturbing comments about women doing their jobs.”
It was actually round two. A day earlier, Rupar had posted a photograph noting that Trump aide Natalie Harp accompanied the president on the Ireland trip, writing, “Look who made the trip to Ireland!” and adding his recurring #TravelWithNatalie hashtag.
The White House responded by calling Rupar a “sick, deluded freak (in his 40s)” who posts “creepy things.” Harp was indeed traveling with Trump. White House pool reports also recorded her returning with the president Sunday night. Rupar answered the second White House broadside by portraying himself as the target of an official government attack.
“For the second straight day, the White House’s taxpayer-funded incitement account is attacking me,” Rupar wrote.

He said the posts resulted in “a flood of harassing and threatening messages,” which he argued was the point of the White House’s response.
The episode therefore contains two separate disputes that became tangled together online. The first was over Rupar repeatedly drawing attention to Harp, Trump’s 35-year-old executive assistant. The second involved an apparently different blonde White House staffer whose job included handling the press — and Rupar’s decision to describe her as a “Trump flunkie” while she was doing it.
The White House chose not merely to correct him. It brought a flamethrower. Rupar now says the resulting fire is the problem.
MY QUICK TAKE
This one doesn’t require choosing a hero.
Calling a woman a “blonde Trump flunkie” for wrangling the press was unnecessary. Calling a journalist “gutter trash” and a “sick freak” from an official White House account wasn’t exactly Emily Post either.
Washington has apparently reached the stage where everybody has an X account, and nobody has an adult supervision account.
