Trump says those $5,000 checks are ‘100%’ happening

President Donald Trump isn’t backing away from his eye-popping promise to send American adults $5,000 checks if Republicans hold Congress in November.

In fact, he’s now guaranteeing it.

“The 5,000’s going to happen, 100%,” Trump told reporters Sunday before boarding Air Force One in Ireland.

The declaration came just hours after House Speaker Mike Johnson threw a rather important wrinkle into the president’s plan: Congress.

“I would assume, yes, he’d need Congress to act,” Johnson told CNN.

Johnson nevertheless sounded willing to give it a shot, calling Trump the “big ideas” president and promising Congress would try to find consensus on the proposal.

Trump first unveiled what he calls the “Trump Dividend” at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, promising $5,000 to every adult American citizen if Republicans maintain control of both the House and Senate.

“If the Republicans win, you win with us and you get $5,000,” Trump told the crowd.

Trump has argued that America’s economic performance and tariff revenue make the payments possible. He has also previously said he doesn’t believe congressional authorization would be necessary.

There are some enormous unanswered questions.

With roughly 245 million adult U.S. citizens, a $5,000 payment to each would carry a price tag of about $1.2 trillion. Current tariff revenue comes nowhere close to covering that amount.

And then there’s the question of when Americans might actually see the money.

Trump suggested Sunday that he’s in no hurry to put it into people’s hands immediately, telling reporters he doesn’t want to do it now because recipients would “go out and spend the money.”

So, for anyone already mentally spending their Trump Dividend, you may want to leave the Lamborghini at the dealership for a little longer.
