GOP Rep. María Elvira Salazar turns on Trump in stunning campaign ad: ‘Hispanics who elected you feel betrayed’

Florida Republican Rep. María Elvira Salazar is running for reelection — and one of her new campaign ads contains a message President Donald Trump probably wasn’t expecting.

“Mr. President, some of your immigration enforcement efforts have gone too far,” Salazar says directly into the camera.

Then comes the line likely to get the most attention.

“Be careful what your advisors are telling you about immigration policy,” Salazar tells Trump. “The same Hispanics who helped you get to the White House in 2024 feel betrayed today.”

Salazar argues that the administration’s deportation campaign is sweeping up too many immigrants without criminal records, while urging Trump to change course.

“You can be for immigration what Lincoln was for slavery and Reagan was for communism,” she says. “I’m not talking about giving them amnesty. I’m talking about giving them a dignified life in this promised land.”

The remarkable part is who is delivering the message.

Salazar isn’t a Democrat attacking Trump from across the aisle. She’s a Republican representing Florida’s heavily Hispanic 27th Congressional District, and Trump endorsed her reelection just last month.

“Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar is doing a truly fantastic job representing the wonderful people of Florida’s 27th Congressional District!” Trump wrote in announcing his “Complete and Total Endorsement.”

 

Nor is this Salazar’s first warning to Trump on immigration.

She has been promoting her bipartisan Dignity Act, which would tighten border enforcement while allowing certain undocumented immigrants who have lived in the United States for years and lack a criminal record to obtain legal status after meeting a series of requirements.

Salazar previously warned Trump that his deportation policies risk alienating Hispanic voters who moved toward Republicans in 2024.

“Mr. President, listen to what I’m telling you, sir,” she said earlier this summer. “You’re a smart guy — you are playing with fire.”

Now she has taken that warning directly to voters in a campaign ad.

MY QUICK TAKE

Nothing says “thank you for the Complete and Total Endorsement” quite like buying airtime to tell the guy who gave it to you that his voters feel betrayed.
