Trump finally gets his Greenland deal — and the U.S. gets something ‘FOREVER’

After months of insisting the United States needed Greenland, President Donald Trump says he finally has a deal.

Not ownership of the massive Arctic island — but something Trump says will last forever.

Trump announced Friday that the United States, Denmark and Greenland have reached an agreement dramatically expanding America’s security role in the strategically important territory.

Trump laid out his version of the agreement in a lengthy Truth Social post:

“I am pleased to announce that the United States of America has entered into an Agreement with The Kingdom of Denmark, and Greenland, that gives the United States permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing ALL of our many U.S. concerns.

“At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America.

“From now on, no U.S. adversary can EVER have a base in Greenland, have a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in Greenland, without our express written approval.”

Trump also said the United States would begin planning a significantly larger military presence in Greenland.

The agreement is aimed in particular at preventing Russia and China from gaining a strategic foothold on the island.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the deal permanently addresses U.S. national-security concerns and ensures Greenland remains part of North America’s strategic defense area.

But there is an important distinction between Trump’s description of “permanent control” and what Denmark and Greenland say they agreed to.

Denmark isn’t handing Greenland to the United States.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the agreement recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark as well as Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen similarly welcomed the agreement, saying it strengthens the island’s security and recognizes Greenland’s interests.

Under the emerging agreement, only NATO countries would be permitted to establish military bases in Greenland, while sensitive investments would be limited to NATO and European Union nations, according to reporting on the negotiations.

The agreement is also designed to survive a potentially enormous future change: Greenland becoming independent from Denmark.

Trump has spent years arguing that American control of Greenland is essential because of its Arctic location, military importance and the growing interest of Russia and China in the region.

Those demands created a major confrontation with Denmark earlier this year, particularly after Trump repeatedly refused to rule out using force to acquire the island.

The new agreement appears to offer a compromise. Greenland remains Greenland. Denmark retains sovereignty.

But the United States gets a dramatically expanded and potentially permanent security role.

The agreement is expected to be formally signed next week during the United Nations General Assembly in New York and then submitted for the required parliamentary approvals.
