BS BULLETIN:
- New York Democratic congressional candidate Claire Valdez says she’ll “carry” the fight of Mexican independence with her to Congress.
- Valdez also revealed she recently met with “comrades” from Mexico’s ruling left-wing Morena party.
- Rep. Anna Paulina Luna called the rhetoric “embarrassing” and reminded Valdez she’s running for the U.S. Congress — not Mexico’s.
A Democratic Socialist running for Congress in New York has managed to get Republicans asking a fairly basic question: Which country’s Congress does she want to join?
Claire Valdez, the Democratic nominee for New York’s 7th Congressional District, ignited the controversy with a social media post celebrating Mexican independence.
“215 years ago, Mexicans fought an empire that demanded our land and our labor. And we won,” Valdez wrote. “I’ll carry that fight with me to Congress as New York’s first Mexican American representative.”
She didn’t stop there. Valdez said she was inspired not only by Mexico’s history but by its current politics. “Last month I met comrades in Morena who are standing up to the empires and corporations that have always taken from us — and building a government for the working class,” she wrote, referring to Mexico’s ruling left-wing political party.
She finished with: “¡Viva la Independencia, Viva México!”
The post quickly caught the attention of Republicans, including Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna. Luna, who is Mexican American, went after Valdez during an appearance Friday on Fox News’ “The Will Cain Show.”
“I think that that’s embarrassing,” Luna said. “So, you’re running for U.S. Congress, not Mexican Congress.”
Luna argued that Valdez’s comments also bolster her case that members of Congress should be required to disclose whether they hold dual citizenship.
“You cannot have allegiances to two countries,” Luna said. She characterized Valdez’s platform as representing Mexico rather than the United States.
Luna wasn’t alone.
Texas Republican Rep. Brandon Gill responded to Valdez: “Not sure if you’re aware of this, but you will be representing the United States of America in Congress and not Mexico.”
Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, also jumped in. “Sorry, which Congress are you ‘carrying this fight’ to? Ours? Mexico’s?” Crenshaw wrote. “And who are we ‘fighting,’ exactly? Spain?”
Valdez’s reference to meeting with Morena officials has created another controversy.
Fox News reported Friday that Valdez is facing calls for a federal investigation over her Mexico trip and contacts with members of the country’s ruling party. The existence of calls for an investigation does not establish that Valdez violated federal law.
Valdez is running for the seat being vacated by longtime Democratic Rep. Nydia Velázquez.
She has been endorsed by the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America and has the support of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Her platform includes abolishing ICE, Medicare for All and universal rent control.
Luna’s assessment Friday was considerably simpler. “You’re running for U.S. Congress, not Mexican Congress.”
