The Trump administration is reportedly developing a new “media probation” program that would give news organizations banned from the White House a path to earn their way back in.
President Donald Trump announced Friday that CNN, MS NOW and POLITICO were banned “effective immediately,” accusing the outlets of repeatedly reporting “fiction and lies” and warning that “other Fake News Media Outlets” would follow.
Exactly what the ban means remains unclear. Reporters from the affected organizations were still working from the White House after Trump’s announcement, and Trump later said only that he wanted the prohibition to go “as far as you can.”
That is apparently where media probation comes in.
Under the new system, banned outlets would begin with a 30-day cooling-off period followed by supervised access to selected White House events.
Reporters would then accumulate points toward restoration of their credentials.
Officials familiar with the proposed system said reporters could earn one point for accurately quoting the president, two points for watching an entire speech before writing about it, and five points for making it through a White House briefing without using the phrase “constitutional crisis.”
Fifteen points would earn access to the briefing room.
Twenty-five would get a reporter onto the White House lawn.
Fifty would unlock Air Force One.
Any reporter caught rolling his eyes during a presidential answer would immediately lose seven points.
POLITICO reportedly asked whether its entire newsroom could pool points.
The request was denied.
CNN wanted to know whether unused points would carry over into the next administration.
Also denied.
MS NOW reportedly requested clarification on virtually everything. That cost them two points.
The White House is also said to be considering a special accelerated program allowing banned reporters to regain access by successfully producing three consecutive stories that Trump reads all the way to the end without posting about them on Truth Social.
Administration officials privately acknowledged that nobody has yet determined whether this is achievable. Trump, meanwhile, has already suggested that the original three outlets may not be alone for long.
“Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow,” the president warned in his actual announcement.
Which means Washington reporters may want to start accumulating points now.
