Cuban delegation walks out as Trump unloads at UN: ‘Freedom WILL be coming to Cuba’

by

BS BULLETIN:

  • President Trump tore into Cuba during his address to the United Nations General Assembly Tuesday.
  • Trump accused Havana of working with radical left-wing organizations inside the United States.
  • Members of Cuba’s delegation walked out as Trump declared that communism would never come to America.

President Trump was talking about Cuba at the United Nations on Tuesday.

Cuba apparently decided it had heard enough.

Members of the Cuban delegation got up and walked out as Trump delivered a blistering attack on the communist government during his address to the U.N. General Assembly.

Trump said the United States would not tolerate hostile governments establishing a foothold close to American territory.

“We’ll NOT allow a haven for foreign adversaries to threaten America on our own doorsteps.”

Trump then accused the Cuban government of spending decades coordinating with communist and left-wing organizations inside the United States.

He specifically named the Communist Party USA, Antifa and the Democratic Socialists of America among groups he said Cuba had cultivated ties with.

Those assertions were Trump’s characterization of Cuba’s activities. His administration has separately accused the Cuban government of supporting hostile actors and spreading communist ideology throughout the Western Hemisphere.

Trump saved his biggest line for the end.

“Communism will NEVER be coming to America, but freedom WILL be coming to Cuba.”

The Cuban delegation walked out during Trump’s remarks, providing a visible demonstration of the hostility between Washington and Havana.

The confrontation comes as the Trump administration has increased pressure on Havana. In January, Trump declared Cuba’s government an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to U.S. national security and foreign policy and established a mechanism for additional tariffs on countries supplying oil to Cuba.

Last month, Trump also extended for another year authorities underpinning U.S. restrictions on Cuba under the Trading With the Enemy Act.

Tuesday, however, required no executive order.

Trump delivered the message from the biggest diplomatic stage in the world.

And Cuba delivered its response with its feet.

MY QUICK TAKE

Diplomatic walkouts are supposed to register outrage.

They also have an unfortunate side effect: Everybody immediately wants to know what the speaker said that made you leave. Trump got the visual and the quote in the same moment.
