Trump makes Marco Rubio’s latest job permanent — because apparently he had free time

by

BS BULLETIN:

  • President Trump has made Marco Rubio his permanent national security adviser while Rubio remains secretary of state.
  • Rubio becomes only the second person to simultaneously hold both positions, following Henry Kissinger.
  • Rubio’s ever-expanding collection of Trump administration jobs has already become an internet meme.

Marco Rubio apparently wasn’t busy enough.

President Donald Trump has formally made Rubio his permanent national security adviser, eliminating the “interim” label from yet another job being handled by the secretary of state.

Rubio will continue serving as secretary of state while simultaneously running the National Security Council.

That puts him in some exceptionally rare company.

Only one other person has simultaneously served as secretary of state and national security adviser: Henry Kissinger, who held both positions under President Richard Nixon from 1973 to 1975.

Rubio had been serving as interim national security adviser since Trump removed Mike Waltz from the position in May 2025.

Trump has now decided there’s apparently no need to find anybody else.

The White House confirmed that Rubio’s position is permanent, formalizing an arrangement that has already lasted well over a year.

And national security adviser isn’t exactly Rubio’s only extracurricular activity.

As The Daily BS previously reported, Rubio’s collection of administration titles became a running internet joke as Trump repeatedly handed him additional responsibilities.

At various points, Rubio has simultaneously served as secretary of state, acting national security adviser, acting archivist of the United States and administrator of USAID.

The memes became so widespread that Rubio himself got in on the joke.

Asked earlier this year about his expanding workload, Rubio said he was willing to perform whatever duties Trump asked of him.

His appointment also reflects the consolidation of foreign-policy decision-making inside Trump’s second administration.

The national security adviser traditionally coordinates competing views from the Pentagon, State Department, intelligence agencies and other parts of government before presenting options to the president.

Rubio will now formally coordinate that process while simultaneously running the State Department.

The announcement comes during an especially busy stretch for American foreign policy, with Rubio deeply involved in the administration’s efforts involving Russia and Ukraine, Iran, Venezuela and Cuba.

Trump joked just Tuesday that he might solve that last problem by simply dropping Rubio in the middle of Cuba and letting him “figure out the rest”.

At this rate, don’t rule it out as another title.

MY QUICK TAKE

Henry Kissinger held both jobs too, so there is historical precedent.

But Kissinger never had to worry that Nixon might also make him archivist, USAID administrator and mayor of Havana before lunch.
