Most world leaders come to the United Nations and politely explain how the United Nations can do better.

Javier Milei took a somewhat different approach.

The Argentine president stood before the U.N. General Assembly Wednesday and told the organization to its face that it had become essentially useless.

Milei began by praising the ideals behind the U.N.’s founding — peaceful conflict resolution, freedom and human dignity — before declaring that the organization had abandoned them.

“It became a useless organization whose only purpose is to sustain a caste of fatally arrogant parasites masquerading as well-intentioned bureaucrats,” Milei said.

And he was just getting warmed up.

Milei accused the U.N. system of failing at its central responsibilities while expanding into areas he believes should be left to sovereign countries.

“Those who were supposed to guarantee collective security and human rights failed in their task,” he said, accusing international institutions of tolerating dictatorships and terrorism while repeatedly targeting Israel.

Then came COVID.

Milei accused international bodies of putting themselves above scientific evidence and national sovereignty during the pandemic and promoting forced lockdowns around the world.

He described the lockdown era as a “global experiment in social control disguised as science” and used the word “genocide” for what he characterized as avoidable deaths resulting from those policies. That is Milei’s characterization, not an established finding about pandemic restrictions.

He also went after the U.N.’s involvement in what he called the “gender agenda,” environmental extremism, economic regulation and uncontrolled immigration.

Milei’s complaint was essentially that the institution has become powerless where strength is needed and intrusive where it isn’t.

He called the result a “curious mixture of anarchy and tyranny” and accused the U.N. of building a “bureaucratic leviathan” devoted to telling people around the world how to live.

Milei also brought along one of Argentina’s oldest international disputes.

He accused the U.N. of failing to resolve the sovereignty dispute over the Falkland Islands, which Argentina calls the Malvinas, and again called on Britain to resume negotiations.

“There’s no shortage of words or resolutions,” Milei said. “What is lacking is consequences.”

But Milei isn’t proposing that Argentina simply walk away from the U.N.

He said his country would continue participating in multilateral organizations where international cooperation is useful.

His condition was characteristically Milei.

“We mustn’t confuse cooperation with subordination,” he said.

Argentina, Milei said, has chosen free-market capitalism and has aligned itself “without ambiguity” with the West, particularly the United States and Israel.

And then, after standing inside the United Nations and describing much of its operation as a bureaucratic disaster, Milei returned to Argentina’s own ambitions.

“No nation is guaranteed a place in history,” he said. “We believe that Argentina still has a great story ahead of it. And we have decided to go out and claim it.”
