Trump shows Xi the Biden autopen portrait — and the internet loses it

by

BS BULLETIN:

  • President Trump personally showed Chinese President Xi Jinping the Biden “autopen” display on his Presidential Walk of Fame during Xi’s White House visit.
  • “This is the autopen,” Trump told Xi before making sure the Chinese leader got the joke: “It’s Biden.”
  • Xi and members of his entourage laughed, setting off furious criticism online — and plenty of amusement from Trump supporters.

President Donald Trump gave Chinese President Xi Jinping the grand White House tour Thursday — and apparently decided no tour would be complete without introducing him to Joe Biden’s autopen.

Trump and Xi were walking along the White House colonnade when they reached Trump’s Presidential Walk of Fame, where former presidents are represented with portraits and Trump-written captions.

Biden’s spot is different.

Instead of a conventional portrait, the display features an image of an autopen signing Biden’s name — Trump’s not particularly subtle jab at his predecessor.

With Xi beside him, Trump pointed out his own two presidential portraits before arriving at Biden.

“Trump, and then Trump, and this is the autopen.”

Xi and members of the Chinese delegation laughed.

Trump then tapped Xi on the arm to make absolutely certain there had been no diplomatic misunderstanding.

“It’s Biden.”

That produced more laughter.

The White House itself posted video of the exchange, but Trump’s critics were considerably less amused.

Former Democratic congressman John Delaney called the moment “the most un-American thing an American president has ever done,” arguing that Trump shouldn’t mock a former U.S. president in front of China’s communist leader.

Former Trump White House aide Sarah Matthews similarly criticized Trump for ridiculing Biden in front of Xi, while Wall Street Journal editor-at-large Gerard Baker offered a three-word review: “Just utterly disgusting.”

Others saw a very different scene.

New York Post columnist Miranda Devine responded with a laughing emoji. Newsmax host Rob Schmitt called it “Hilarious,” while conservative influencer Nick Sortor declared Trump and Xi laughing over the autopen display the “HIGHLIGHT” of the day.

The moment came during an elaborate state visit in which Trump rolled out unusual levels of ceremony for Xi as the two leaders dealt with considerably more consequential matters involving trade, artificial intelligence and the broader U.S.-China relationship.

But for a few seconds on the White House colonnade, international diplomacy consisted of Trump pointing at an autopen and explaining the punchline to the president of China.
