Don Lemon would like to clear something up. He says he is not against Donald Trump.
The former CNN anchor made the distinction during a recent episode of “The Don Lemon Show” after playing a street interview with a man discussing the president.
The man told Lemon that he knew Lemon was “against” Trump before explaining why he thought the president deserved more time to pursue his agenda.
Lemon eventually stopped the video to respond.
“I’m not against Donald Trump. I’m not against a person in general. I’m against lies.”
Lemon went on to say he dislikes Trump’s policies and the way he believes the president treats people.
But he argued that disagreement should not automatically be interpreted as personal hostility.
Lemon also objected to another assumption.
He said people often describe him as a liberal because of his criticism of Trump, but Lemon said that is not how he identifies politically.
“I’m an independent.”
That part is consistent with what Lemon has said previously.
In interviews since leaving CNN, Lemon has repeatedly described himself as an independent while making clear that he opposed Trump’s 2024 candidacy and voted for Kamala Harris.
He has also remained one of Trump’s frequent media critics.
Lemon has attacked Trump over immigration, election disputes, rhetoric and other policies, while arguing that his criticism is based on those issues rather than party loyalty.
His latest explanation came after the man in his street interview offered a considerably more mixed assessment of Trump.
The man said he did not support every Trump policy but argued that four years may not be enough time for any president to fix the country.
Lemon let him finish.
Then he decided one part of the conversation needed a clarification.
He may disagree with Trump on plenty.
Just don’t call it personal.
